The Republic of Guatemala is in Central America. It has about 13.3 million people. The main language is Spanish, they also have more than 24 indigenous languages. Guatemala is an interesting country to go visit. It is a unique country that can teach you a lot. It has all kinds of people. Most are descendants of the Mayans. Guatemala has many tourists attractions, from beaches, to volcanoes, to Ancient Mayan ruins. Guatemala is a colorful place and their climate is very nice and tropical. Their ancestors are both European and indigenous. Most of the population is rural. Their main religion is Roman Catholicism. In 1996 they passed a law which was to put documents in different indigenous languages to help them out because most do not speak Spanish. Between 1523 and 1524 the Mayans were defeated by Pedro de Alvarado. The first capital of Guatemala was Ciudad Vieja. It was ruined by floods and an earthquake in 1542. The second capital was Antigua founded in 1543 and was also ruined by two earthquakes in 1773. The third capital , Guatemala City, was founded in 1776 and it is the capital to this day. Guatemala won independence from Spain in September 15, 1821. For each 15th of September they have fairs everywhere. They have food and they light fireworks everywhere. Guatemala keeps the Mayan spirit alive. They still do sacrifices. The stelae called burning fire is a place in Quirigua where they do ceremonies. Some examples are like blood sacrifices of ear or tongue piercings. The blood is believed to be water for Earth that brings fertility. They have many sculptures that have hieroglyphics carved all over. The Mayanization is about many Mayan professionals and students who contribute to the government administration. They show the rise of the Mayan influence and hope that someday they can take on political responsibilities while keeping old Mayan values. They have traditions and cultures that have helped them preserve their identity. People can learn about the Ancient Mayans who were a very important civilization. People also have the opportunity to help the indigenous people who have low resources. There are many organizations to help poverty. Guatemala is “The Heart of the Mayan World”. The Mayan people lived from about 250 to 900 CE in Mesoamerica. Which includes modern day Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and parts of southern Mexico.These people had many remarkable achievements, all of which can fit under the categories of scale, genius effort, and significance. These achievements include an advanced trade system, an amazing understanding of numbers, and the ability to design and build cities that are still mostly standing today. However, their most impressive achievement is their complex calendars.
This essay will study the Central Intelligence Agency’s intervention in Guatemala, and how they assisted Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas in the coup d’état against Jacobo Arbenz. It will describe the reasons of the intervention, the United States’ interest in Guatemala, and how it affected Guatemalans. Such events help explain much about the role that the United States has in their own migration. The paper argues that the United States’ political interest in Guatemala played a fundamental role in the migration of Guatemalans to its borders. As a result of this intervention, Guatemala suffered one of its worse political periods in their history. Guatemala experienced a period of political instability that led the country into social chaos, where many Guatemalans opted to migrate to the United States.
From the time of its colonization at the hands of Spanish Conquistadors in the early 1500’s, Guatemala has suffered under the oppression of dictator after dictator. These dictators, who ruled only with the support of the military and only in their own interests, created a form of serfdom; by 1944, two percent of the people owned 70 percent of the usable land.
Spanish is the official language of Guatemala, but the indigenous people of Guatemala have maintained a distinct identity, centered on lands and villages in the western highlands. Many speak a Mayan language rather than Spanish. Although most are poor by material standards, their lifestyle is ecologically and spiritually satisfying to them, and they have largely chosen to remain isolated from national life.

I learned more than I ever imagined on my summer study abroad trip to Costa Rica. I learned that Costa Rica is a country like no other. The country is much different than what the United States of America is like. The lifestyles, customs, and practices of Costa Rica are very different than those that I am accustomed to. As an outsider looking into the country, I saw a country that is very poor financially but very rich in spirit. They do not appreciate wealth as United States citizens do, but instead appreciate love and gratitude. I noticed that Costa Ricans have very strong family values and cultural roots.
Cultural conflicts often revolve around certain topics such as: quality of life issues, the recognition or strengthening of identities, third generation rights, and the concept of cultural citizenship (“Understanding Social Conflict” 40). The five main addressed issues within these topics are political struggles, public safety issues, environmental issues, human rights conflicts, and issues of values, beliefs, and identity. A well known and unfortunate event caused from cultural conflict is the Guatemalan Civil War. The Guatemalan Civil War, which lasted from 1960 until 1996 began as the indigenous Guatemalans fought out against poverty, oppression, and the lost of land from foreign companies.
The Maya religion required a highly complicated method of worship that demanded bloodletting and sacrificial rituals that were often fulfilled by the kings and queens. These efforts were necessary because it was believed to "feed" the gods. It was the sacred duty and responsibility of the ruler to often feed the gods with their own blood. The believed their rulers had the power to pass in and out body to the spirit world and acted as messengers to the celestial world.[109]
Racial divisions are evident in societies across the globe, and have been for centuries. While there are distinct differences between these relationships of class and race, many similarities are clear. History has shown a long list of tactics to exploit, terrorize, and manipulate racial minorities and lower class citizens. For the indigenous people of Guatemala and the American Indians, the inception of racial and class discrimination occurred during colonialization and continues to show its impact today.
The Mayans lived in Southern Mexico and Central America in their capital, Tikal, which is in present day Guatemala. The Mayans were known for their engineering, one structure they were famous for is their pyramid temple in Tikal (Document 1). This pyramid was the tallest structure in the Americas up until the 20th century and is still standing today. The government must have been strong and well organized in order to carry out such a large task. The Mayan religion had multiple gods and this pyramid was most likely devoted to one or used as a place for sacrifices. Another accomplishment of the Mayans was the creation of their calendar. An extra document that would be useful is one that explains how the calendar was created. The Mayans must have studied astronomy and math to a great length. Similar to the Ancient Egyptians, they wrote with symbols and pictures known as glyphs that were used in the calendar. These glyphs were gods, such as Zotz (Document 2). The use of glyphs is an acknowledgement of a writing system, which is another accomplishment.
...Salvador has great tourist attractions for everyone. One historical attraction is the Mayan ruins of Tazumal. It is considered to be El Salvador’s best persevered ruins. La Joya de Caren, Ca Sablana and San Andres are a few more Mayan ruins with museums to visit. Another historical attraction is the Panchimalco Indian Village. Its residents are some of the only surviving Pipil Indians. El Salvador has beautiful natural attractions too. One is their tallest mountain, El Pital, near the border with Honduras. In San Ignacio City, you take forest trails and see numerous inactive volcanoes. You can also go hiking on the San Salvador volcano. Los Chorros is a natural waterfall, and Lago de Llopango is a crater lake which you can also visit in El Salvador.

This was exciting to read because it shows that while they love their country, they are also interested in learning about other cultures. In contrast, the author discusses some of the disadvantages that Belize has as well. For example, when Nancy Drew meets David’s parents they begin to explain that Belize has a poor economy. In addition, they also want to preserve the natural state of the country. This indicates that even though Belize is a gorgeous country, the citizens are trying to survive through financial hardship.
In the general overview I am going to go over a few topics like history, geography, the political system, the economic system, and the cultures and subcultures of Costa Rica, and why it is so interesting to learn about them.
