Have you ever considered taking a trip outside of the United States? If yes, let me take you to a country called Costa Rica. Now the reason I say Costa Rica is because it was a county I had no prior knowledge about, I did not even know where it was located until I did my research. After looking into this country a little deeper I wanted to know more about it like; the general overview, a brief history, the geography, the political system, the economic system, and lastly the cultures and subcultures of Costa Rica.
Once I was able to dig deeper I found out that Costa Rica is a very interesting country with fun and exciting adventures waiting like; hiking next to a volcano at night, rappelling down a waterfall, or ever soaking in a hot spring. I do not know about you but my bags are packed and I’m headed for the airport right now. If only I did not have class tomorrow, I can dream right? Well the first major topic I am going to start with is the general overview of Costa Rica, so let us get started shall we.
General Overview
In the general overview I am going to go over a few topics like history, geography, the political system, the economic system, and the cultures and subcultures of Costa Rica, and why it is so interesting to learn about them. Costa Rica has a brief but strong history on how the Spanish came to Costa Rica and tried to take it over however the geography and the wildlife had a play in how it was not so successful for them at first but how they eventually adapted to it. The environmental geography of Costa Rica,
Now for the physical geography of Costa Rica, where is it located; well Costa Rica is located in Central America, on one side it has the Caribbean Sea and on the other side it has the North Pacific Ocean. To the north there is Nicaragua, and to the South there is Panama. Now knowing where it is located it makes more since about the rainy climates and the coastal lines. Coast Rica has two climates; tropical and subtropical which breaks down into dry and rainy seasons, the dry seasons starts in December and ends in April, the rainy season starts in May and ends in November. As far as terrain goes Costa Rica has coastal plains and also has mountains which have many volcanos in them.
Colombia is found in Northern South America, between Panama and Venezuela. Colombia borders both the Caribbean Sea, as well as the North Pacific Ocean, which is found between Ecuador and Panama. In perspective, Colombia is slightly less than twice the size of Texas.1 Colombia's climate is tropical along the coastlines as well as the eastern plains, but the climate is much cooler in highlands. Many natural resources are found and taken from Colombia's land. Some of theses natural resources are petroleum, natural gas, coal, iron, nickel, emeralds, hydropower, and even gold!
To understand the machinations of General Guardia, we must first look briefly at Costa Rica’s historical situation. As noted by innumerable books and articles on the subject, the term “Costa Rica” was something of a misnomer for the country until the coffee-boom of the 1830s and 40s. The “rich coast” was named, as legend has it, by Christopher Columbus himself after landing there in 1502 and seeing natives adorned with gold. Ironically, the natives witnessed by Columbus were not natives at all, but invading members of the Carib tribe that had brought their own gold to this relatively poor place. True to form, Columbus displayed a stunning misinterpretation of the facts and coined the site “Costa Rica” (Watkins). This “discovery” in 1502 would, as in the rest of Latin America, herald the end of life as the indigenous knew it. For the next 300 years Costa Rica would find itself under Spanish control, yet this burden was significantly lightened by the absence of riches the Europeans craved. These long centuries under Spanish influence would find Costa Rica in the position of the periphery, relatively spared from the harsh rule often employed in more profitable sectors.
Prior to the colonization of the region now known as Costa Rica, meaning Rich Coast, approximately 25 indigenous tribes were thriving in self-established societies. One of the preeminent tribes of Costa Rica was that of the Chorotegas, with the tribe’s name translating to “fleeing people.” Over 1,500 years ago, the Chorotegas migrated from Mexico to the northwestern region of Costa Rica, now known as the Guanacaste Province and the Nicoya Peninsula. Mexican influence was evident in the tribe’s culture, as indicated by the Chorotegan language, Mangue, the primarily Aztecan calendar that they utilized, as well as other practices such as self-mutilation. The Chorotegan society was largely focused on the tribe’s polytheistic religion, with priests maintaining a high status on the social hierarchy. Additionally, agriculture played a significant role in the Chorotegan lifestyle, corn being the crop that was primarily harvested; cacao beans were utilized as a form of currency and crops were distributed to ensure that no one would go without food. Colombia lies in the northern most part of South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea the Bogota is the capital of Colombia. Bordering between Panama and Venezuela and bordering the North Pacific Ocean, between Ecuador and Panama. The size of Colombia is 1,138,910 square kilometers less than three times the size of the state of Montana. Mainland territory divided into four major geographic regions. Andean highlands are composed of three mountain ranges and overriding valleys and Caribbean lowlands; Pacific lowlands; and llanos and tropical rainforest of Eastern Colombia. Colombia also has small islands in both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. Climate in Colombia has unique variety in temperature resulting in changing differences in elevation not much seasonal variation. Human habitation can be traced back more than 10,000 years but it appears Costa Rica was sparsely populated and a relative backwater in the pre-Columbian era. There is little sign of major communities and none of the impressive stone architecture that characterized the more advanced civilizations of Mesoamerica to the north and the Andes to the south. When Columbus arrived near Lim¢¢n on September 18, 1502 on his third and last voyage to the Americas, there were probably no more than 20,000 indigenous inhabitants They lived in several autonomous tribes, all with distinct cultures and customs. Costa Rica's only major archaeological site is at Guayabo, 30 miles east of San Jos‚‚, where an ancient city, dating back to 1000 B.C. and though to have contained 10,000 people at its peak, is currently being excavated. Many interesting gold, jade and pottery artefacts have been found throughout the region and are on display in several museums in San Jose.
Panama is located in Central America, and it borders the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. On rare occasions, some people consider the territory east of the Panama Canal as part of South America. The location on the Isthmus of Panama is strategic. By 2000, Panama gained control of the Panama Canal, and it connects the Atlantic and the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean. Panama is ranked 118th worldwide based on land size. For comparison, Panama is slightly smaller than South Carolina or slightly larger than New Brunswick in Canada. The biggest feature of the country's landform is the central spine of mountains and hills that form something called a continental divide. I learned more than I ever imagined on my summer study abroad trip to Costa Rica. I learned that Costa Rica is a country like no other. The country is much different than what the United States of America is like. The lifestyles, customs, and practices of Costa Rica are very different than those that I am accustomed to. As an outsider looking into the country, I saw a country that is very poor financially but very rich in spirit. They do not appreciate wealth as United States citizens do, but instead appreciate love and gratitude. I noticed that Costa Ricans have very strong family values and cultural roots.
The physical science of the two countries is completely different. According to the main speaker, Costa Rica is much smaller than the United States. It could actually fit in the state of Oklahoma about two and a half times (Northwestern Oklahoma State University, 2010). The population is a little different too. Costa Rica’s population is around 4.5 million, compared to Oklahoma which has approximately 3.4 million.
The Dominican Republic is a nation located in the Caribbean Sea and shares the land with Haiti, and the whole island is called Hispaniola as it was named when Christopher Columbus discovered it during his first voyage in the year 1492. The country has proved to be one of the leading Caribbean countries with accessible healthcare to its citizens and even expats. However, the country has a multinational population with low-to-medium incomes and multi-level access to healthcare based on income. Despite this, improvements to healthcare system can lead to better medical outcomes to all the citizens and even to the suffering citizens of the Haiti. Because the Dominican Republic is an immediate neighbor to struggling Haiti, it is the moral obligation of the Dominican to provide Haitians with access to healthcare.
The country’s two coastlines are referred to as the Caribbean and Pacific, rather than the north and south coasts. To the east is Colombia and to the west Costa Rica. Pacific. Dominant features of their landform is highlands forming the continental divide. The higher elevations near borders with Costa Rica and Colombia. The highest point in the country is the Volcán Barú which rises to almost 3,500 meters. The lowest elevation is in the middle of the country where it is crossed by the Panama Canal.
The climate in Costa Rica and Washington are close to each other. Both of the places get a lot of rain and small amount of rain. Costa Rica is covered in huge jungles. Reminding me of the movie Tarzan, the jungles are full of monkeys, macaws, and many other curious creatures. Another interesting thing about Costa Rica was the beach. On the pacific side of the country, the sand is muddy and black. Even though the dark sand made the ocean look dirty, it made the white sea shells shine exceedingly bright. One of the scariest parts about Costa Rica was the reptiles. It seems that every river was full of enormous crocodiles. Although the lush, green jungle was a beautiful sight to see, Bonaire had even prettier views. Since it is located in the Caribbean, the island of Bonaire is surrounded by the most gorgeous turquoise water. The ocean was definitely the prettiest part of the island. The main terrain of Bonaire is desert. Unlike Costa Rica, there are hardly any trees. The island is covered in rocks and cactus. Because of the lack of vegetation, there were very few animals that thrive. For example, donkeys and finches were some of the only animals I saw on the island. Just like Costa Rica, Bonaire has a reptile problem. Thankfully, the reptiles in Bonaire were much nicer. Iguanas ruled the island. They were everywhere. In the Quintana Roo state of Mexico, there are many thousands of tourists from the USA and Europe every year, which has spawned a tourism business economy and intense development of the coast. The area’s people and natural resources are going through a period of rapid change, which has the potential to benefit or damage the area. While money and development can give jobs and opportunities for education and health care, they can also deplete and damage the very resources that made the Carribean coast pleasing. Development and tourism, particularly ecotourism, must be safe and sustainable, environmentally, economically, politically, culturally. Our study has given us insight into some of these difficult development areas, and we will use our observations and conversations to demonstrate and disseminate ideas for better development.
The beautiful, radiant and vibrant island that goes by the name of Jamaica is located on the Windward region of the Caribbean. It is one of the best place to be on earth. Our motto “Out of Many One People”, symbolizes the vast cultures and races that make up this beautiful island. Jamaica the land I love, lives on in each individual and leaves a positive impact even with just one visit or no visit at all. In this essay I will elaborate on the various cultures that build up the island, the different attractions the country has to offer and an overview of the unique lifestyle of Jamaicans.
