Tokugawa Ieyasu born in 1542 as Takechiyo Matsudaira, the son of the lord of Mikawa. At the age of four, he was sent to the neighboring clan of Imagawa to help ensure an alliance for his family, and there he was raised and received a noble's education. After the death of his father, he changed his name to Tokugawa Ieyasu and began to consolidate power for himself. In 1561, Ieyasu allied with the powerful neighboring warlord Oda Nobunaga, who, during the final decades of the Sengoku period, had become one of the primary powers thought by the people of Japan to be capable of bringing about unification.
