Theme Essay, TKAM In the beginning of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Atticus Finch says, “Not in money,” Atticus said, “but before the years out I’ll have been paid. You watch.” (Lee 27). This is him doing nothing but good for Mr. Cunningham, and nothing but good came out of it too. The theme of To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is, forgiving people and showing compassion towards others even when it is not earned, can lead to way less regret in the end as shown by Scout and Jem having to read for Mrs. Dubose, and Boo Radley put a blanket on Scout in a time of need, or even Calpurnia trying to do the right thing by apologizing to Scout. Jem and Scout were neighbors with an old lady named Mrs. Dubose. She was a mean old lady always yelling at them for simply talk or even wearing simple clothes. So of course like the children they were they were mean back. Scout and Jem didn’t know why they were always being sent to her house everyday to read to her after they talked back to her. This was until she died. Atticus said to them after she died, “Jem, when you’re as sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her.” (Lee …show more content…

She and Scout get in a little fight about manners when they invited Walter Cunningham to dinner after school one day. Calpurnia fussed at her and told her she needed to quit talking and eat in the kitchen if she didn’t want to stop being rude. Scout takes that in offense and decides to be super stubborn and only talk to her if she had to and in a rude voice. This end in Calpurnia making up with her and apologising to Scout. Scout was confused and first not knowing what Calpurnia was doing as she said, “She had wanted to make up with me, that was it” (Lee 38). Calpurnia is a great example because even though Scout was being rude at the table and didn’t deserve an apology, she didn’t want anything to happen and regret not
