In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird there are multiple heroes and some anti-heroes. Some examples of heroes are as follows: Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem Finch, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. Some examples of anti-heroes are: Aunt Alexandra, Bob and Mayella Ewell. This essay will portray Atticus and Boo Radley as the heroes of the story and Bob Ewell as the anti-hero. Atticus is portrayed as the main hero in the novel because of his natural courage, his fairness and tolerance towards everyone to treat them all equally, he is known as a big role model in the town of Maycomb. Boo Radley is also portrayed as a hero in the novel, he doesn’t like to go outside but faces his fears and ends up saving Scout and Jem. Bob Ewell is portrayed as the anti-hero …show more content…

This is shown throughout numerous occasions. These include: when Boo goes outside to put the blanket around Scout when she is cold, this wouldn’t have seemed very heroic if it was any other character but it is seen as heroic as Boo doesn’t like to go outside and rarely does so. He decides to put the blanket around Scout because he can see that she is cold and he knows it is the right thing to do. Another example of Boo being heroic is when Bob Ewell is threatening to kill Scout and Jem. Boo sees Bob terrorising the children and steps out to confront him, Bob tries to stab Boo so Boo moves out of the way and Bob falls on his knife. Also another occasion where the reader sees Boos heroism is when Jem loses his pants in his yard, he doesn't get mad and he even repairs a hole in the pants and hangs them on his fence so that Jem can easily access them. This example demonstrates Boos heroism because again he doesn't like to go outside but he doesn't want Jem to get in trouble so he decides to help because he knows Jem will get in trouble if he doesn’t help. From these occasions we can see that Boo Radley is another true hero in the story because he steps way out of his comfort zone to defend Scout and …show more content…

Another occurrence is when Bob beat his daughter and lied about it. Bobs racism shows when he tells Atticus that he’s “real sorry they picked you to defend that nigger that raped my Mayella”. This quote shows that Bob Ewell is racist and is part of his act that he loves his daughter. After he beat his daughter he made up a lie that Tom Robinson had raped Mayella Ewell, in these days a white skinned man could accuse a dark skinned man with no evidence whatsoever and that was exactly what happened. Although Bob seemed like he loved his daughter in court, we soon find out that it was all an act and he only cares about himself. Bob beat his daughter and blamed it on Tom Robinson which was the complete wrong thing to do, this shows that Bob was a selfish character and only thought about what would happen to himself, it also showed that he doesn’t care about Mayella at all. From these occurrences we see that Bob was a narcissistic, self-centred human being with no love for his
