The most extravagant ship your mind could possibly fathom still does not compare to the Titanic. The Word titanic even originates from a Greek Mythology word meaning “gigantic”. The Titanic was not built for speed, but built for luxury and size. The boat was commonly called “the unsinkable ship”. The ship’s first voyage was from Southampton in England, to New York in the United States. There were 2,228 people aboard the Titanic, counting passengers and crew members. Unfortunately the boat was only equipped 20 (the legal minimum) life boats, enough for only 1,178 people. No one could have predicted the horrifying events that would happen to “unsinkable ship”. Starting in 1909, the building of the Titanic took a whopping three years. The Titanic was built by a ship liner company called, The White Star Line. The White Star Line’s rival, Cunard built two of the fastest passenger ships thus far, so the White Star Line decided to fight back with plans to build a large, luxurious ship to outshine any ship Cunard could ever build. 2,228 people boarded the Titanic. But people were not the only things aboard the ship. The ship was also a mail carrier, and had 26,800 cubic feet set aside for the storage of mail such as letters. Many people boarded the ship excited and optimistic for a new life in America. There was a slight set back on the day of the maiden voyage. The Titanic came within four feet of hitting another ship called the New York. This set the ship back about an hour, but once the New York was safely out of the way, the Titanic’s first voyage went off without a hitch.
