Thomas Edison is one of America’s most popular inventors, most famously known for his invention of the incandescent light bulb as well as his involvement with DC electricity. It was Thomas Edison who lit up New York City with his DC power stations and amazed all with this what seemed to be almost magical new thing called electricity.
Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11th, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. His parents were Samuel and Nancy Edison, Thomas was the youngest of seven siblings. For a few months Edison did attend school, however that quickly came to a stop due to the fact that Edison would have a hard time concentrating while in class. Now while Edison did invent the model of the light bulb that everyone uses to this day, there were many already existing light bulbs even before hand. The only problem with these light bulbs prior to Edison’s model was that they were impractical and not really meant for home or office use. It wasn’t until Edison finally invented his model of the light bulb, that we finally had something feasible for ordinary use, and with the invention of the light bulb came the demand of electricity in everyone's home. On September 4th, 1882 the first DC power station was installed on Pearl Street, and so the electric revolution began, but not too far into the future would a battle between Edison and his DC system versus an inventor and former employee of Edison by the name of Nikola Telsa and his AC system take place. Now while in the end AC did end up being the winner due to its proven efficiency over DC electricity, DC is not entirely obsolete. Everyday people use DC electricity to power their electronics, and even homes if powered off grid by a renewable resource for
