Themes In Robert Frost's Out, Out And Disabled

The authors of “Out,Out ” and “Disabled” present the idea that life is hard and unfair by portraying the horrible way in which two different boys have undergone a life changing event. Both protagonists are young, naive boys who’s lives have been ruined by war (in Disabled) or a saw (in Out,Out). Firstly, the theme in both poems is about being exploited and then being left alone to die. In “Out,Out ” “since they / Were not the one dead , turned to their affairs” after he had passed away by working hard for them shows this clearly, making the reader sympathise a lot with how manipulated he was. This evident theme is explored and presented by Robert Frost through the flowing structure of the poem , one stanza in chronological order where everything occurs fast and smooth, and the plot twist at the end. Similarly, in “Disabled” the theme of being exploited is still prominent but on a wider scale. When the protagonist first joined the army, the recruiters were “Smiling “ as “they wrote his lie”. This simple line shows how much the recruiters are now haunting him as they did not care about the people who they were sending off to fight for their country. The almost sarcastic bitterness of “Smiling” , which is also emphasised by being at the beginning of a stanza , highlights the protagonist’s emotions as well as Wilfred Owen’s thoughts on this happening. It is made clear to the reader that Owen disagreed with the way innocent men were exploited in WW|.
