INTRO
William Shakespeare extensively explores central themes and issues in the play, King Lear. Shakespeare discusses fake and true filial love and the rarity of loyalty in King Lear. Shakespeare portrays the importance of fake and true filial love through Lear and his daughters. In King Lear, loyalty is portrayed through Kent 's service to King Lear. The central themes and issues are the focus of the play King Lear.
FIRST PARAGRAPH
In King Lear, love is shown as important and strong. The filial love between Lear and his three daughters is the driving force of the play. Most characters in the play are self-consumed and only act on their desires. Kent’s loyalty is a rare example of loyalty in the play. Kent’s loyalty to Lear is shown in the line “Now, banisht Kent, if thou canst serve where thou dost stand condemn 'd, so may it come thy master whom thou lov 'st shall the full of labour”. Kent states this after he is banished by King Lear. Through the use of second person and emotive language Kent’s loyalty to Lear is displayed. By using emotive language, Kent wants to express that he would be willing to help King Lear no matter what happens and that he loves his master. Shakespeare also uses archaic language of lov’st to emphasise that Kent’s loyalty is not like others as he would do anything for Lear. Kent is willing to do anything for Lear, even after everything Lear had done. Kent’s loyalty is presented in the line ‘I have a journey, sir, shortly to go. My master calls me, I must not say no”. Kent is offered a place to rule the kingdom but chooses to instead, kill himself to join Lear. Kent’s choice is extreme but he believes that even if Lear died, he would still be loyal to Lear. Through the use of first person and a solemn tone, Shakespeare is able to express Kent’s sadness towards Lear’s death and show that he was willing to follow his master in death. An imperative is used when Kent says ‘My master calls me”. The imperative shows that he will still listen to Lear even after he is gone, showing that he is loyal to Lear.
