When it comes to being virtuous, we seek moral righteousness. This relates to engineering because when it comes to an engineer they must have these specific traits, such as honesty, courage, and fairness. Especially in the work environment they need the most important virtue and that is professional responsibility. In this paper, I’m going to talk about Aristotle’s virtue theory, and the necessary steps to acquiring specific virtues to reach Eudaimonia. Introducing Aristotle’s virtue theory, which illustrates the characters ideal traits. Whenever someone become virtues, one achieves the title of being Eudaimonia. He explained virtue as a means of doing the right thing no matter the time or place, towards the right people. When it comes to virtue, we learn it through experience and not through instructions. Aristotle argues that when someone behaves in right manner, they are in a state called, “Golden Mean” hence, they are in a state of virtue and understand the means between two extremes, which was noted by Aristotle as “Vices”. These extremes were illustrated from the far left side as a deficiency and on the far right as excess. For instance, if we take a look at being courageous we stand in the middle as being virtuous. But if we are too scared or cowering in fear then we stand on the far left side of the bar as being too deficient. Similarly, if we are on the far side of the bar then we are shown to be reckless. When it comes to engineering, we declared a couple of specific virtues such as honesty, modesty, and fairness. Therefore, in my future work environment as an engineer, it would be great to adopt the virtue of honesty, because if a software encounters a bug, then it is my duty to inform the team and get it fixed. The reason is that sending in an app with bugs can have a negative backlash from consumers. For example, my team and I chose to build a game but if there is a report of a bug then it would be in our duty to correct it and update it. Otherwise, we will lose the trust of consumers and will have a negative impact on our organization. Hence, by being honest in a situation like that can help us maintain our reputation. Another great virtue to adopt would be courage since there might be a time when my team and I encounter problems with the game as a whole. Where the mechanical aspect of the game starts to not working properly and so crashing the game 4/5 times. As a result, we receive a tremendous backlash from the fans and the media. In order to set the correct tone and encourage the public of fixing the issue; I would need to be courageous in that situation to provide a testimony and solution to our problem.
