I agree with Ray Bradbury, humanity is doomed. Technology has created so many problems, so rapidly, that humans cannot respond to the changes. Technology has become a tool that makes our lives easier, but the negative effects are far too overpowering, making it almost impossible to stop it before it is too late. Examples from “The Veldt,” and “There Will Come Soft Rains,” show the potential dangers that technology could bring. It may seem unbelievable, but just as George Hadley said, “This is a little too real, but I don’t see anything wrong,” (Bradbury 1). Humans cannot see the problem, only past it. Global warming, antibiotic overuse, overpopulation, and modern warfare, are just a few of the threats technology bestows upon us.
To begin with, the rise of technology has allowed people an easier way of transportation, but everything comes with a cost, such as greenhouse gases. Cars, power plants, factories, oil sands, clear-cut, to name a few, has all played a factor in the increase of climate change. This can cause the extinction of species. In the past 50 years, life expectancy has increased tenfold. Technology has allowed people to live longer, stay healthier, and be able to reproduce; we are looking towards and currently in and overpopulation. Also, the standards of living in third world countries are increasing. People are becoming wealthier and having much more children. By 2050, at the rate at which we are growing, there will be approximately 10 billion people living on earth. Also at the rate of resource consumption, there will not be enough food for everyone. With fresh water already being scarce, there would be a shortage. Most bodies of water will be polluted and certain countries will become dictators.
