Salinger uses the theme of the protection of innocence as his main character’s motivation to elaborate upon Holden’s “I sat there for about a half hour after he left. I mean I just sat in my chair, not doing anything. I kept thinking about Jane, and about Stradlater having a date with her and all. It made me so nervous I nearly went crazy. I already told you what a sexy bastard Stradlater was” While Jane was Holden’s friend, and likely crush, his motive here is not jealousy. He is just very concerned for Jane and what she and Stradlater might be doing. When they were younger, all they would do together was play checkers and hold hands. Holden cherished the innocence of their relationship, and the thought that Stradlater might be tainting
