The submissive role of women
In the novel, Frankenstein and the play The Crucible, the weak presentation of females becomes evident as females allow the male-dominant characters to subdue them. Elizabeth Lavenza, a woman of compassion and benevolence, hides behind the male figures in her life as an act of showing gratitude to her family. Similarly in the play, Elizabeth Proctor plays a woman of self-respect and good acts as she passively gives up her value of being a female character in order to protect her husband, John Proctor. Both women, exhibit the nature of being inactive and having no voice as they patiently serve the men in their life as a righteous duty. Therefore, in Mary Shelley’s novel and Miller’s play, Elizabeth Lavenza and Elizabeth Proctor prove to be weak women through their passivity and lack of voice.
Firstly, Elizabeth Lavanza embodies the novel’s motif of uninvolved women as she waits enduringly for Victor’s attention and love. Through her efforts of pleasing Victor, Elizabeth takes upon the bearing decision of letting Victor choose another bride if he desires to. This is evident when she states: “I declare to you that our marriage would render me eternally miserable unless it were the dictate of your own free choice” (Shelley 178). In accordance, Lavanza through her mother’s death wish complies to marry Victor Frankenstein. However, she is sees him going through a rough time and with caution confesses her love for him. Even as she confesses she goes in the weak role of giving Victor the choice to walk away from her life and marry another girl if he wishes too. Thus, the weak role of women is evident through Elizabeth Lavanza’s passivity.

Therefore, in the novel Frankenstein and the play The Crucible, both Elizabeth Lavanza and Elizabeth Proctor prove to be passive female characters with a lack of voice. Through her inactive role in the novel, Elizabeth proves to be weak through her role in the text with men. In addition, Elizabeth Proctors passivity is displayed through her withdrawal of standing up for herself, Lavanza’s apathetic nature strips her of not having a bold voice as does Proctor submissive nature which highlights her loss of voice. Overall, Shelley and Miller highlight the theme of portrayal of women through the impuissant female characters in the text.
