During the 16TH century a revolution in Europe began. The Protestant Reformation was a religious revolution that came about because the dissatisfaction of the Roman Catholic Church. The Reformation was founded by German theology professor Martin Luther (“Reformation,” 2016). The Reformation allowed people to produce their own ways of religion. A question has arisen on whether or not the Reformation could have been stopped? The Roman Catholics involvement in politics, monetary importance, and the manner of worship are all reasons to why the Reformation could not have been stopped.
The Roman Catholics were highly involved in politics. The wealthy and nobles held the highest positions over the clergy (Spielvogel, 2013). The people were recognizing that the Catholic Church weren’t showing a true way to receive salvation. Cardinals, archbishops, and bishops took over multiple church offices to increase their revenue. Indulgence was a way to decrease the amount of punishment for one’s sins. Relic was a practice in which they gave pieces of dead bodies of former saints and martyrs that consumed spiritual value. The Roman Catholics used these two practices to gain money out of the people. The people were charged to receive and partake in the practices of indulgence and relic. Once the Reformation began, Martin Luther introduced another way to receive salvation other than having to use the Roman Catholics’ practices. Martin Luther showed the people that studying the Bible and having faith in God was the way to receiving salvation. Because of Martin Luther’s new religion, people began to shift to the Reformation because they realized that the Roman Catholics were using them for monetary gain.
