What would you do in your life if you did not have music? Tough question, right? Music is not something that is tangible but for some it is as essential as that. Many people who have mental issues, use music therapy to help them get through that. Just as physical therapists help their patients physically, music therapist help their patients mentally and physically. Even so with that simple explanation many people still have no idea what music therapy is. Although it is simply in the name it is much more august than that. The main university near me that provides it is Montclair State University. Montclair provides two different levels of music therapy which include the Basic: B.A in Music Therapy which is a degree only or board certification training. This course takes approximately four and a half years to complete and includes a unique combination of music, physcology, and music therapy. Not only does one have to take this course but must also complete a six month full time supervised internship. While the second level is an M.A in Music Therapy which is a Graduate Master of Arts. You have common titles such as dentist, teacher, physical therapist, doctor, or accountant but then there's music therapy, a not so common job. If i were to tell you i wanna be a musician you'd understand what i wanna do. If i were to tell you i wanna be a therapist you would also understand what i wanna do. However when I say I want to become a music therapist not many people can understand what it is and why I wanna do it. To put it simply I love music and love helping people in a way not many people can. While doctors have medicine and psycho therapist have their words, music therapist have music. Something not many people are born to do while others just have the music in them. It is something Ive researched for a year or so and fell completely in love
I will define PTSD, then in further detail explore and explain how music therapy can be used to treat and manage the symptoms of PTSD. Finally, I will evaluate if Music Therapy is a suitable intervention for helping veterans treat the symptoms of PTSD.
