The Road by Cormac McCarthy embeds issues throughout the novel such as the will to survive, the power of love, and the ability to trust in vital situations. In the novel, McCarthy illustrates a person has no physical or mental boundaries when protecting the one they love. The power of love and the extent to which one will do for love is prominent in creating the relationship between the father and the son. When entering certain conditions, the son had to be able to trust the father to do what was morally right. The strenuous situations McCarthy creates within the novel deepens my belief that the will to survive, love, and trust can and will overcome the struggles of life. His wife says, “The one thing I can tell you is that you wont survive for yourself.” She is implying that in order to live in his or her desolate world, that person will have to have someone to live for. This is the exact circumstance the father is in. He feeds off of his need to survive for his son. Love will cause even the strongest of the bunch to submit to its will. In the novel, love is one of the main driving forces that cause the father to continue to risk his life in order to save his son’s life. The father admits that “the boy was all that stood between him and death.” The man’s will to live is purely fueled by his love and need to protect his son. Examples of the father’s strong love is his unflinching decision to shoot the man who wanted to harm his son and the thief that stole their cart. The boy’s survival is the most important thing to the father. So, he is willing to hurt the ones that endanger the boy’s survival. The father’s love will stop at nothing to ensure that the boy’s life is protected at all times. Through these actions, it confirms my belief that love is one of the strongest driving forces that can control a person beyond
