Most people never receive the opportunity to view a bengal tiger in its natural habitat. Even those people who live near the tiger’s native area rarely see this creature since only 2500 still survive in the wild today. Their numbers, as well as the populations of countless other species, are plumbing because of poaching, deforestation, and other harmful human activity. With the busy world we live in today, nobody bats an eye to this startling truth about the decline of animal populations. The only way for people to experience the beauty and majesty of the bengal tiger, as well as other endangered species, comes through visiting zoos. Without the education and awareness offered by zoos, most people would forget about endangered animals and how their everyday action affect the environment surrounding those creatures. Some people say zoos do not draw a crowd of people because of the lack of interest. People who utilize this argument do not know that “American zoos draw more than 110 million visitors a year- more than the combined annual attendance at baseball, football, and basketball games (Claggett 3).” The United States only contains around 320 million people which means that one third of the population visits some type of zoo annually. Zoos provide for a safer and more interactive family environment than traveling to a movie theater or watching tv at home. Generally, the public believes zoos benefit education. Out of a study of 5,500 visitors, “a large majority of visitors (76%) indicated that they believed that zoos and aquariums are invested in conservation and education ( Falk et al. 7).” This statistics shows that the public believes zoos contain the best interest for the community’s education. Zoos support education by running summer camps, tour guides, and information stations. Without the valuable resources provided to communities by zoos, people would not know about different species of animals and how they interact with the world around
Considering the many challenges animals face in the wild, it is understandable that people may be eager to support zoos and may feel that they are protective facilities necessary for animal life. In the article “ Zoos Are Not Prisons. They Improve the Lives of Animals”, Author Robin Ganzert argues that Zoos are ethical institutions that enrich the lives of animals and ultimately protect them. Statistics have shown that animals held in captivity have limited utilitarian function resulting in cramped quarters, poor diets, depression, and early death for the animals thus, proving that Zoos are not ethical institutions that support and better the lives of animals as author Robin Ganzert stated (Cokal 491). Peoples Trust has provided me with an extreme amount of information on why zoos are beneficial through their “Zoos & Conservation article.” Peoples Trust has pointed out that not every zoo mistreats their animals, but never took into consideration how the animals themselves may undergo, and what is being taken away from them.
Stotts uses scholarly articles, newspaper articles and historical monographs to show the changing ideologies and perception of zoological parks in America. He addresses the reasons adults and children alike were attracted to these parks. Zoos have been with us throughout our history, and can provide a good barometer of public beliefs and values at any given time. Therefore it seems necessary to explore whether in today’s society contemporary zoos are a means of educating and conserving or still seek to control and exhibit animal others for human benefit. In order to make this assessment there are a number of contributing factors. Firstly it is important to establish context by considering the history of zoos and looking at the changes from the early menageries to contemporary zoos who strive to be institutions of refuge for animals facing twenty-first century global challenges. This links into how the physical space of zoos has changed over time and whether these advancements have made any crucial difference to the welfare of animals. Following this conservation, education and scientific research will be explored in detail in order to assess whether they provide good enough motives for keeping animals in captivity. I will seek to argue that although attempts have been made to point zoos in the direction of conservation and education, in my opinion the concepts of dominance and human superiority are still at the core of modern zoos.
There are many places where people can go to see live animals such as aquariums, zoos, and safari parks. A pleasant way to define a Zoo is to call it “an establishment that maintains a collection of wild animals”. (Google def) Another way to say that is a facility in which animals are “enclosed in cages for public exhibition”. I believe zoos are ethical; however, changes need to be made to eliminate problems I have discovered. In this argumentative essay, I will be arguing the ethics of zoos and certain problems that need to be addressed that people are not aware of. Zoos are great places to take the family out for the day to have entertainment; however, problems such as captive breeding, length of life, and animal stress need to improve.
At the beginning of this course we tried to define the word spectacle, we came up with such ideas as catches attention, large, inauthentic, wide coverage, etc.(first day class) finally noticing that it is difficult to pin point the exact definition to a spectacle. For this research paper I decided to focus my research and analysis on Zoos and how they have become spectacles in today’s society. I will analyze the zoos myself, as well as relate the spectacles of zoos to some theories such as Umberto Eco’s hyper reality, and Jean Baudrillard’s theory of Simulation. I will end by focusing on some specific instances with the idea of animals the spectacles for human enjoyment.
Over the years, we have seen propaganda, documentaries, misinformation, beliefs and choices that have been made in and by zoos. With all of this, it means our judgement and others have been clouded by what media has told us. In “Why zoos are good” Dr. Dave Hone highlights education as one of the main reasons he supports zoos, mentioning how many people who live in cities may never get to experience wild animals if it weren’t for zoos. Hone states educational videos and documentaries are an option, but they “pale next to seeing a living creature in the flesh, hearing it, smelling it, watching what it does and having the time to absorb details” (Hone). Not only do zoos provide interactive learning opportunities and a direct opportunity to experience how animals behave in the flesh, Hones notes zoos can be educational else where, as a significant amount work to send workers abroad to conservatives to help educate others on how to improve conditions for the animals. However, there is another side to the educational perspective. A critic of zoos, Yourofsky argues against the positive education experience others believe zoos provide, supporting his opinion with how the animals are in their unnatural habitats. Yourofsky writes, “one cannot learn about animals who are in an UNNATURAL habitat displaying UNNATURAL behaviors from the stress of confinement and lethargy of captivity” (Yourofsky). Hence, from this logic the educational experience is minimized because the animals are in an inaccurate environment, impacting behavior and differentiating from how they would truly behave
Zoos today say that one of their main goals is to conserve endangered species and eventually reintroduce them back into the wild. However, Benjamin Beck, former associate director of biological programs at the National Zoo in Washington, found that over the past century only 16 of 145 reintroduction programs worldwide ever actually restored any of the animals back to the wild (qtd. in Fravel). He also found that a majority was carried out by the government and not the actual programs themselves. Beck noted that the billions of dollars the zoos were receiving were going towards hi-tech exhibits and marketing strategies to get people to go to the zoos. Since approximately 1250 B.C., ancient Egyptians had created and practiced the capture and display of animals in what are now known as zoos (Fravel). Records describe such exotic animals as birds, lions, giraffes, and tigers in captivity (Fravel). Since then, zoos have continued to entertain millions with the exciting chance to view exotic animals up close and personal. Even in ancient Greece, exotic animals were on display in fighting arenas, and in enclosed viewing areas. Originally in America, zoos were just created so that royalty and the wealthy could flaunt their exotic animals to the public (Leolupus). Today, with species threatened and habitats disappearing worldwide, zoos are serving a new purpose other than the mere exhibition of animals – conservation. (Fravel). When you think of a zoo, you either think of a fun, entertaining place that provides close-up and exciting exhibits of wild animals that you would otherwise never get the chance to see, or a place where people keep suffering, unhappy animals captive just for entertainment and display. However, despite whichever view you hold, and despite the stereotypes, some zoos have evolved to serve alternative and helpful purposes. Although some zoos face controversy due to allegations such as lack of space and quality care, neglect, and cruelty, some zoos have programs specifically designed to help and protect animal species. For example, these zoos have programs that help such conservation efforts as breeding.
“It is estimated to be 50 times more expensive to keep an elephant in a zoo than to protect sufficient natural habitat to sustain that elephant and many other animals.” (CAPS, Sad Eyes & Empty Lives- The reality of zoos) Indeed, only if the billions of dollars that spent on building a zoo are optimized to preserve habitats and animal welfare, can our grandchildren still have a chance to see more rare animals by their own eyes.
The Sumatran tiger prefers a dense tropical rainforest near rivers or swamps, they tend to be around lower annual rainfall, farther from forest edge and closer to forest centers. They strongly avoid forest areas with high human influence. In acacia plantations they tend to use areas closer to water, and prefer areas with older plants. Sumatra provides a varying landscape in which this subspecies lives. In zoos the Sumatran tiger has quite a little space compared to the wild and since they travel up to 32km a night. The enclosure is suitable for the tigers, there is grass, boulders, trees, plants,sun and shade, a pond for the tigers to swim and also quality enrichments for the tigers to play with. Animals that live in zoos are more likely to suffer from illness or injury as opposed to those who live in the wild, and they also have shorter lifespans.
The Zoo and Its Benefits Zoos bring humankind closer to wildlife. Though, sometimes that means taking the animal out of its natural habitat.
