The Sumatrans are the smallest of the living subspecies, weighing about 250 pounds. Adult tigers range from 4.5 feet to 9 feet long. Males are larger than females. Tigers tails are 3-4 feet long. There are approximately 361 captive Sumatran Tigers live in zoos around the world. Sumatran tigers prefer natural forest areas in the island of Sumatra. This particular tiger is active at night as its easier to hide the orange coat but in winter they are also active during the day. Nothing preys on the Sumatran tiger as it is the top of the food chain. Sumatran tigers Tigers are carnivores (meat eaters), they feed on wild pigs, wild cattle and some species of deer. The sumatran tiger can consume a total of 40 pounds of meat at once, although they can go for days without eating. Some adaptations to the Sumatran tiger include, patterned colouring changing, Their teeth and also The Sumatran tiger prefers a dense tropical rainforest near rivers or swamps, they tend to be around lower annual rainfall, farther from forest edge and closer to forest centers. They strongly avoid forest areas with high human influence. In acacia plantations they tend to use areas closer to water, and prefer areas with older plants. Sumatra provides a varying landscape in which this subspecies lives. In zoos the Sumatran tiger has quite a little space compared to the wild and since they travel up to 32km a night. The enclosure is suitable for the tigers, there is grass, boulders, trees, plants,sun and shade, a pond for the tigers to swim and also quality enrichments for the tigers to play with. The zoo tried to make it as close to the wild as possible but still appealing for the public eye. I do not think the sumatran tiger can survive in the wild because although it is a big animal and can look after itself, there are people out there who would do anything to get their hands on the sumatran tiger and i feel that there is too much risk leaving the animal in the wild because there are not many left so therefore we can do the best to protect them by putting them in zoos so noone can hunt these beasts. I feel the sumatran tiger will rip our enrichment right open to get the food, i don't think it will last long because it is made out of such weak material. Although i do hope it takes a while to find it but the sumatran tiger is a very smart animal so i wouldn't be surprised if it finds it in 30 seconds. The Sumatran Tiger's behaviour differs greatly depending on what gender it is. I think both genders will react differently to the enrichments.
