Slow food movement was first brought up by an Italian, Carlo Petrini. He came up with this idea when he saw a group of young kids sitting in front of Spanish Steps and eating McDonald’s enjoyably. Then he decided to start the slow food movement to resist the fast food and preserve the traditional cuisine. Today, there are more than 150 countries joined in this movement.
Rome is a city with great food everywhere. In Rome, I tasted the most traditional Italian food that I’ve ever had. Food culture is very important for people to get to know a country better. The first difference I found is that Italian has different eating sequence compared to the other countries. As a Chinese, I thought western cuisines are all eat in the same order, which is an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert. However, for all the restaurants that I’ve been to in Italy, they all have four courses, which means they have two main courses. The first course is usually pasta and the second course will be meat or seafood. Even in Italy there are local fast food places. I have been to a pizza place, which from order to get the food only took about 10 minutes. Customers just need to tell the people at the counter which flavor they want and what size they want. Then the workers will cut a slice of pizza for you directly from a big piece of big pizza. I think Italian does the fast food in a very smart way. They made the traditional Italian food, pizza, as the fast food, which is healthier than those deep fried fast food. Also, there will not be food waste, because people know how much they can eat. Compared to the U.S., Italy has far less fast food place and the fast foods are healthier.
