Organizational change in public relations is universal as organizations try to adapt to a changing society and push for competitive advantage. In order for this to be successful, and organization is required to have strong leadership in place for unpredictable outcomes. Leadership in public relations can strengthen the profession and contribute to organizational effectiveness. The primary question is “What does leadership in public relations really means and what qualities does that leader need to have to be successful?” For that reason, I have watched four video interviews with distinguished public relations leaders. According to her, it means that you are providing the team that you are working for with support and giving them all the guidance that they need to be successful. A person should have a vision for where the company is going to go and how they are going to get there. Alicia mentioned a couple of key qualities that would make great leaders. First, you have to have integrity in order to be known as honest in this industry. Second, you should have constant curiosity with a willingness to learn and challenge yourselves. Third, you have to be committed to excellence in order to deliver a brilliant work product for a client. Finally, you have to have the courage to do the right thing. My initial reaction to this interview is that integrity may be the most important aspect, because if you say you are going to do something, you have to follow through with it. Nilanjana R. Bardhan, a professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Communication Studies, explains how multi-dimensional public relations leadership is. There are leadership skills in public relations that you could apply across several different industries. One skill is to be the kind of person that is an excellent communicator and is able to inspire and motivate the groups of people in the organization. I think that this is a significant prospect to accomplish goals and objectives that have already been set for that organization. Dr. Bardhan also mentioned four qualities that are necessary to succeed in public relations. One of them is to be a really good student of human nature. I think this is important because we have to work with different types of people from various backgrounds and we have to build relationships and connections with those people. Second, we have to stay calm and composed in the times of crisis. I think this is important because in order to come up with great solutions, that would be a powerful ability to have. Third, a leader has to be a lifelong learner. In my opinion, this is necessary for us to keep growing and not think that we already know everything there is about being a great leader.
