The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros with all respect is not my favorite book out of our curriculum, but it was enjoyable to read. During this year we had learned about literary elements that can help us enhance the story. To us younger readers, it may be easier to connect to since its mostly a journey of self discovery. Along with this, The House On Mango Street was different to read because its writing style made you think more about the structural form rather than just the words. The House On Mango Street utilizes its literary terms in a unique form. One of the most notable and simplest is when Esperanza first describes her house to us. ” But the house on Mango Street is not the way they told it at all. Its small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you'd think they were holding their breath. Bricks are crumbling in places, and the front door is swollen you have to push hard to get in.”(4). This personification helps add to the story as you …show more content…

It’s simply a form of poetry and personal narrative that's purpose is to create a moment that introduces vision, mood or setting. One of her most visually appealing vignettes, or chapters, is called “Hairs”. Cisneros goes into deep thought to describe each one of the families kind of hair yet, she describes her mothers the best. “But my mothers hair, my mothers hair, little like rosettes, like candy circles all curly and pretty because she pinned it in pincurls all day,sweet to put your nose into... “(6). These vignettes have their moments of keeping the story going when Esperanza has a slur of emotions or thoughts. In these lines however I have trouble understanding how this emphasizes her journey on finding herself. To me, some of these chapters don't seem to partake to its development of the story. I struggle to recognize if the vignette is the best form of writing this
