Peter Jackson, a director, once said, “It was impossible, and as a result of it being impossible, I just started shooting the movie with most of it not prepped at all.” As Jackson said, it is crucial to take everything in from a book and try to transform it into a movie; that is why there are many changes added from a novel to a book. The novel, The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien and in the film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Peter Jackson directs the movie. In the book, Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, thirteen dwarves, and Gandalf, a wizard, goes on an adventure to seek the lost gold of the dwarves and the town of Dale. Throughout the story, the dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf face many challenges, such as trolls, goblins, wolves, and a dragon, …show more content…

The author shows Bilbo’s and Gollum’s encounter when the author states, “‘Bless us and splash us, my precioussss! I guess it’s a choice feast; at least a tasty morsel it’d make us, gollum!’ And when he said gollum he made a horrible swallowing noise in his throat… The hobbit jumped nearly out of his skin when the hiss came in his ears” (Tolkien 72). This quote puts an impact on the story by showing how Gollum is friendless and lonely for many years in the dark caves. He is all alone, so that causes him to start talking to himself; this affects the way Gollum lives since he cannot communicate to others in the outside world. Bilbo is afraid of Gollum at first because of the way he speaks and looks describe in the book. Peter Jackson changes the storyline of Bilbo’s first encounter with Gollum by showing how Gollum first attacks a goblin for a feast as Bilbo lays on the ground watching the scene. Gollum is dragging the goblin and punching him down leading the goblin to the top of the rocks in the middle of the lake to devour him (Jackson). Jackson’s changes put an impact on the story by showing how Gollum is violent by attacking a goblin. Because Gollum keeps attacking goblins for a feast, he becomes more lonely and unfriendly. However, this argument is wrong, for the reason that in the book and the film, they show similarities towards Gollum’s character and how he is a lonely creature who has not communicate to anyone in a long time. For example, the novel and the movie reveal that Gollum is unfriendly towards Bilbo as he finds out that Bilbo has his ring. Also, in the film, Gollum is shown to be unfriendly as well by attacking a poor goblin. Although there are little changes to show Gollum’s personality, the small changes are still ineffective because it reveals his same character traits either way. With Jackson’s changes, it does not affect the way we see Gollum’s character. He is still a lonely creature in the book and movie who lives in the dark caves and talks to himself. The movie is just clearly revealing how he can be seen and heard by the audience instead of picturing it in our heads with the author’s words. The two changes Peter Jackson creates demonstrate that they are not
