Our class has read many books throughout the semester, one book we read that was impressive was The Hobbit. In the Hobbit, we receive the history of the character named Bilbo; this character was intriguing throughout the story. The history of Bilbo’s character is the reason why the story was daring. His character went through many transitions throughout the story. Some of these transitions occurred due to his thoughts of home, his thoughts of being back in his home drove him to do indisputable things such as fighting dragon’s, giant spider and more.
These events all started in the beginning of the story. At first Bilbo was a shy, timid creature who loved being alone in his home. Until One day Bilbo was greeted by a wizard named Gandalf, who …show more content…

His thoughts of returning back to his home one day causes him to do erratic things. For example, Bilbo was going to be killed by a character name Gollum, but he had a great advantage over Gollum. He had the chance to kill Gollum, but instead Bilbo went on his way without killing him. If Bilbo didn’t long for being back in his home one day, he probably would have risked his life and fought off Gollum without any hesitations. Another example was when the Bilbo and the Dwarves were held hostage by giant spiders. Bilbo relieve himself from the spider hold and ended up killing the spider. Bilbo wasn’t a killer, but his yearning for being home had changed him into one. Bilbo’s unfulfilled need to be home was changing him not only into a killer, but a courageous hero as well. For instance, the Dwarves were taking by elves and imprisoned and Bilbo found a way to sneak them out. The old Bilbo, who stayed home all the time would not have done this, he would have been too afraid of being caught by the elves. After that situation, Bilbo was involved in another situation where he had to be courageous. He came encounter with the dragon that took away the Dwarves’ territory and riches. Bilbo used his invisibility ring and to talked to the dragon. If his thoughts of returning home was absent from his mind Bilbo would have gone full force and tried to fight …show more content…

For example, it was already in Bilbo’s genes to be adventurous and courageous; if the reader didn’t get the history of his family tree we would have thought that Bilbo was a warrior through instinct and not from his genes. That bit of information from the history shows the reader that Bilbo has a chance at not dying, which would have ruined the reader’s response to the story. Another example would be if the reader didn’t get the past information about the dwarves’ territory being taken by this dragon, the reader would probably be confused on why the characters are working so hard to get this territory back. The history of this character was important as a whole and connected to literature in a global content. If we were to compare this story to literature in a global content this story would be place in time where war occurred over territories. In the journal article by Monica Toft stated that wars occur over conflict due to border crossing, this occurred many times in the Hobbit. For example, throughout the story Bilbo the Dwarves and Gandalf cross over the goblins territory it causes a mini war and they had to end up fighting them off. Then as the story went on Bilbo and his crew was taken by a group of spiders because they crossed their territory. Then that caused a fight because Bilbo and his crew tried to get away
