The Hobbit in the movie ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R Tolkien, the protagonist, Bilbo Baggins, displaying a hero’s journey starting as a weak and cowardly person with no knowledge of the world outside his comfort zone. As a trilogy the movie only follows part of the hero’s journey to the ORDEAL.

The hero’s journey twelve structure starts off with the protagonist in his ordinary world to the comfort of his own home. Receives the call to an adventure where he would decide whether to join or to reject the offer. The hero fears the unknown outside world and tried to turn down the call to an adventure however the hero will have a change of heart. Coming across an unexpected traveller who gives him guidance. At the end of Act one, crossing the Threshold, the hero commits to leaving his comfort zone hence the ordinary world. Further more the protagonist meets allies and enemies along the way provided with ordeals, tests and rewards. About three-quarters of the story the protagonist is driven to almost completing the mission. At the climax the protagonist is once again tested on the threshold.

Gandalf has given Bilbo the chance to join him on a journey to reclaim the dwarves’ homeland. At this point Gandalf explains to the Dwarves how Bilbo is the perfect thief for them. (NEED QUOTES) Bilbo has declined Gandalf’s offer to go on the journey. Gandalf has tried to offer Bilbo to join him on the journey multiple times but he still refused to go. As Gandalf goes off without him Bilbo suddenly decides to run after he dwarves to join them on their journey, but at heart Bilbo still does not want contribute in this journey. ...or Bilbo, Gandalf is his lifeline, as Bilbo always get into some trouble thanks to Gandalf however always seem to survive. The people that Bilbo travels along with are dwarves. They also prove to be noble companions by carrying Bilbo through the tunnels when fleeing the goblins. Being a hobbit has its disadvantage of not being able to keep up with the speed of Gandalf and the dwarves. As for showing great respect the dwarves carry Bilbo through the tunnels assisting him in escaping the goblins

The Hobbit: An unexpected journey does not entirely follow the twelve structures of hero’s journey. This movie only contains eight of the twelve leading to the ordeal. Leaving out the reward, road back, resurrection and return with the elixir for the other parts of the trilogy. However this does not mean it is a defective movie. Over all it is still a fantastic fantasy movie.
