He just doesn't know how to handle things sometimes. On the adventure he just follows, but all of a sudden Gandalf leaves! The dwarves look to Bilbo for leadership. Bilbo is a good leader when Gandalf is away, and for three important reasons.
Scouting ahead is very useful and important, especially in a situation where anything could happen. Fortunately, Bilbo Baggins takes on this role. For example, when Bilbo and the dwarves are separated from Gandalf in Mirkwood Forest, and are stuck at the edge of the river, Bilbo uses his keen eyesight to locate a boat to get across. Also, as they continue into Mirkwood, they wonder as if they are ever going to escape. Bilbo was able to climb a tall tree to scout, but saw no clear way out. Bilbo Baggins can do just that. For example, when they run into the Elves of Mirkwood, Thorn get taken into the dungeon. Bilbo is able to free him by taking the key, then explaining that hopping in barrels and falling into a stream will help their escape. In the end, this turned out to be true. The dwarves were able to escape, and eventually floated down to Esgaroth where they could remain safe.Also, Biblo was able to figure out how to get the Dwarves of the spider web. This was not an easy task, but Bilbo was able to complete it. Leaders need to be able to solve problems, but was Bilbo capable of the last
