The Great Gatsby is an all time classic in literature and even in film. I selected this film because of how intricate the plot is. The story takes place in the 1920's where the stock market is booming and there was prohibition happening but that didn’t stop people from drinking like mad men . One of the main characters Nick caraway moves to New York right next to Mr. Jay Gatsby without even realizing it until he gets a person invitation to one of his annual parties he throws every weekend. Daisy Buchannan is Nick’s cousin and Tom is daisy’s husband who are both extremely wealthy. The connection between these characters is years ago daisy …show more content…

Probably because Tom had money and Gatsby didn’t have a penny to his name. So, Gatsby has Nick come to his huge party and asks him to do a favor for him, which would be to get daisy and them to meet. Greed, power, lies, cheating are all social issues and themes that play a huge role in this story. The terms old money and new money describe the social statuses taking place in the 1920’s. Old money means people who are born into a rich family that barely have to work for it. Then new money is when someone has to work daily for it, That group rank very high in the economy. The first one is when Nick is at Gatsby’s mansion during a party. He’s with Jordan Baker, Daisy’s best friend, and They’re having a good time drinking, talking with everyone when he asks her to dance with him and this higher upper class gentlemen comes up, takes her away and say’s “Rich girls don’t marry poor boys”. Back then it was very odd to see a rich girl with a poor man. Gatsby made a plan with daisy after secretly seeing her behind Toms back to break it off with Tom and run away together. He thought it was going to go smoothly but the twist soon happens when Daisy stays with Tom because he has money and the money Gatsby has is from bootlegging alcohol to people which was illegal. Besides the fact that Tom is an abusive and controlling husband, she stays with him for that reason, Leaving Gatsby behind her for good. The second scene is isn’t necessarily a scene because it happens throughout the story, which Tom goes and cheats on Daisy with a woman named Myrtle. Part of this is obviously the cheating part of the social issue the other part is the lies. While driving home, Daisy and Tom hit Myrtle when she ran out into the road to get away from her husband.
