The Ghost appears briefly throughout Hamlet by William Shakespeare, yet his presence is significant to the development of the play. King Hamlet, The Ghost, controls the dilemma even after death, influencing young Hamlet’s actions. “So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear (Shakespeare Act I: 31).” King Hamlet makes young Hamlet commit to avenge his death. King Hamlet was murdered before the play began. The Ghost is an appearance of him, where his soul seeks out for vengeance.
At midnight the guards, Horatio, Marcellus, and Barnardo, noticed The Ghost on their post. They realized that the apparition appeared as the dead King Hamlet. “But in the gross and scope of mine opinion This bodes some strange eruption to our state (Shakespeare Act I: 6).” The Ghost affected the guards in a sense where they believed Denmark will have an unfortunate outcome.
