Some people experience traumatic things ranging from the worst thing you can imagine to something not as bad. When you are only 12 years old and you watch and do something to make it stop, you will never be the same as you were before. People fluctuating from a young age to people who are in their declining years can be abused. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo expresses things that you wish never existed or ever happened. Unfortunately, they do. Stieg Larsson witnessed something when he was younger and did nothing to stop it. Larsson Wrote this book with the intention of trying to do something about the way women were treated.

The secondary main character Lisbeth Salander is both a victim and survivor of rape. “I don’t think it would be a good idea for you to tell anyone about our games”(Larsson p.244 ). Salander uses her past to fuel her passion of exposing and punishing the men who deserve it for what they have done to the women. Many women like Salander, who weigh less than men by lots have more of a struggle of being forced to do something. “you will so precisely everything in your power to ensure I am declared competent ” (Larsson p.286). Salander is taking over her situation, while there is a woman or girl who cannot do that because they are stuck somewhere or always with the person who is raping them. The person who is trapped may not be able to think quickly on their feet. Some may not be able to think of a plan to get out because they are scared for their life. Simple things such as noticing things about someone can help them out by knowing that someone cares. Someone might be smarter than what people say. Many people have said and quoted “you can never tell a book by it’s cover” (Lester Fuller and Edwin Rolfe) and it is true, it could have an ugly cover but be so great inside. Lisbeth has many tattoos on her, but that does not mean that she is a scary person or a thug. You cannot tell why someone is they way they are just by looking at them you have to get to know them. People such as Salander get judged by how they look and not on what people see after they know her. Salander has fought through so many things to get to where she is now. Bruce Dawe's purpose is to convey something about rape to the reader. Written from the perspective of a raped girl, his heart-rending poem shares her intense suffering and the terrible impact that rape can have on both the victim and the family. But most importantly, Dawe evocatively comments on the "glare of blindness" that is often shown towards those who have tragically been subjected to rape -and calls for more compassion and understanding from all.
I chose to do my paper on the movie, For Colored Girls, by Ntozake Shane (2010). In the movie For Colored Girls, I thought about all the Tangies who have not been professionally treated for their childhood rape. It is not an easy subject to talk about. The victims sometimes hide their emotions for years. Sexual abuse on a child is vulgar and according to Martin (2010), it is considered maltreatment and should be reported to authorities. Tangie knew her attacker, in fact he lived with them. He was a caregiver who was supposed to protect her. She held a lot of anger towards her mother because she felt that at least her mom should have protected her.

Modern day thought typically views slavery from one perspective that of the physically abused male slave, beaten and battered by his aggressive slave master. In Harriet Jacob’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Jacobs brings light to the other side of the horrors of slavery, the psychological abuses, in particular the psychological abuses that women in slavery face. Comparatively, Marie Jenkins Schwartz’s Birthing a Slave does depict the horrors of slavery from the perspective of women and the horrors of the abused child bearing mothers. Although some may believe that in Harriet Jacob’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Jacobs fails to get at the true horrors of the physical brutality of slavery as presented in Marie Jenkins Schwartz’s Birthing a Slave, in reality Harriet Jacobs autobiography and Marie Jenkins Schwartz’s Birthing a Slave both depict severe horrors of slavery but from the perspective of mental and psychological anguish.

With the stereotypes and myths that are seen throughout the areas, we are able to see how things make a difference when it comes to how things are portrayed. Victims of rape should not blame themselves or see the situation as a joke, which is proven in Patricia Lockwood’s poem, “Rape Joke”. She uses a very unique style of a story-like poem to tell a story of an instance that could happen and how to see the situation afterwards. There is the aftermath of how victims feel and act after going through the traumatic experience of a rape. Lockwood is able to portray that experience in detail in her poem “Rape Joke.”
The women had to experience being raped while they were still virgins which must have been a horrible moment in their lives. It was made worse by the fact that it happened multiple times in the case of the old woman. Cunegonde’s response was to scream, struggle, bite, claw and try to scratch the Bulgar soldier’s eyes out(Voltaire, 31). Cunegonde tried to resist being raped but was overpowered and stabbed which is what would be expected in that kind of a situation. From the way She retold the events to Candide one can see how strong she is in being able to move past it, then again she didn’t have much time to dwell on it as events around her forced her to move on from it. The old woman wasn’t too descriptive on what occurred when she was raped but she did say that “The Princess of Palestrina and I certainly needed all our strength to withstand everything we underwent...(Voltaire 40)” From this we can assume that the women were raped many times over the course of the trip. from what we read after that however, one can tell it must have required a great deal of strength to continue on even though there were times she thought of committing suicide. In The Nirvana Principle by Lisa Bird-Wilson, each time the imagery of a girl at the ravine is repeated throughout the story, the narrator exhibits progress with her healing process. The narrator is an intelligent yet stubborn 14 year old girl named Hanna. The story takes place in the room of the narrator’s shrink, Dr. Semenchuk. Throughout the short story, Hanna undergoes a healing process she is trying to work towards due to a trauma that she has encountered. Yet even with the help of her doctor, she struggles to be at peace with herself and the world around her. As previously stated, her father, Carl, sexually assaulted and raped her a copious amount of times and impregnated her not only once, but twice. The abuse began when she was only three years old and continued until she was fifteen; Precious was pregnant at twelve years old. Child rape occurs every two minutes in the United States and sadly one in three girls will be sexually molested before the age seventeen. Sexual abuse is an atrocious, disgusting and horrendous issue that happens every single day to an immense number of children. “Precious” acknowledges this topic and again, shows the negative effects it has on an individual. Although Precious was a victim of sexual abuse and incest; she wanted more for her and her children’s lives. A child who is the victim of prolonged sexual abuse usually develops low self-esteem, a feeling of worthlessness, an abnormal or distorted view of sex and has a higher risk of committing suicide. On the other hand, Precious did not let her destructive sexual abuse define who she is. “I cried the other day and I felt stupid, but f*ck that day. That’s why god made new days,” she says. Despite her rough past, she is strong enough to continue her life. As much as society does not want to admit, violence serves as a form of entertainment. In media today, violence typically has no meaning. Literature, movies, and music, saturated with violence, enter the homes of millions everyday. On the other hand, in Beloved, a novel by Toni Morrison, violence contributes greatly to the overall work. The story takes place during the age of the enslavement of African-Americans for rural labor in plantations. Sethe, the proud and noble protagonist, has suffered a great deal at the hand of schoolteacher. The unfortunate and seemingly inevitable events that occur in her life, fraught with violence and heartache, tug at the reader’s heart-strings. The wrongdoings Sethe endures are significant to the meaning of the novel.
Throughout history society has been controlled by men, and because of this women were exposed to some very demanding expectations. A woman was expected to be a wife, a mother, a cook, a maid, and sexually obedient to men. As a form of patriarchal silencing any woman who deviated from these expectations was often a victim of physical, emotional, and social beatings. Creativity and individuality were dirty, sinful and very inappropriate for a respectful woman. By taking away women’s voices, men were able to remove any power that they might have had. In both Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple” and Kate Chopin’s “The Awakening”, we see that there are two types of women who arise from the demands of these expectations. The first is the obedient women, the one who has buckled and succumbed to become an empty emotionless shell. In men’s eyes this type of woman was a sort of “angel” perfect in that she did and acted exactly as what was expected of her. The second type of woman is the “rebel”, the woman who is willing to fight in order to keep her creativity and passion. Patriarchal silencing inspires a bond between those women who are forced into submission and/or those who are too submissive to maintain their individuality, and those women who are able and willing to fight for the ability to be unique.
1 in 5 women will experience sexual assault as an adult (cite). To me, that statistic is mindboggling. I’m not sure people are really aware of the fact that in our society women are raped every single day or maybe they are aware but it doesn’t truly affect their lives until it happens to them or someone they know. Rape is a serious crime. I’m not sure there is a worse crime than rape. Rape is when one person violates the personal space of another. More times than not the attacker is male and the victim is female. With rape not only are you at risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases but also your piece of mind is taken away. Women can experience symptoms of PTSD after being raped. Rape is crime where the act in itself is awful, but also dealing with it after is very painful as well. If our society were more knowledgeable about rape maybe it wouldn’t happen as much. Knowing the difference between the different characteristics of a serial rapist versus a single victim rapist could potentially help women or men identify their attacker, if they know what to look for. This may be more of a struggle for if the attacker is a stranger or a one-time offender, but if women are able to give details about their attack, this could help the criminal justice system find these criminals after the fact. The part about the mother bragging about how she controls her son by pinching him, then asking the reader to imagine that happening in a man and woman situation really gripped me. I’ve never thought about the small abuses children go through, probably because I haven’t experienced it myself. But I know it happens every day and I think it’s horrendous that the United States hasn’t signed the U.N.’s Convention on the Rights of the Child. There’s one thing after another that makes me question our politicians sanity. In chapter 14 of bell hooks I thought it was interesting yet, expected that men were willing to accept equality in the bedroom because they got better sex, but refused to accept household equality by helping out a little.
