In 1932 Wilhelm Valentiner commissioned Diego Rivera to construct a fresco to capture the true meaning of Detroit’s Industry. Rivera came to Detroit at a time when the great depression had hit hardest and he used this tumultuous time that had forced it’s way over the city as inspiration for his work. For it to embody the true significance of the industry in Detroit, he began the mural with a piece which symbolized a fruitful harvest, and more importantly, a new beginning. “Music can change the world because it can change people.” Over time, music has evolved to become as different as to when we first came to know it. Music has traveled through time as far back as 500 B.C to as current as today of 2014. It was used to soothe the soul, and speak for the unspoken from small social issues to civil rights movements, music was there to express what we felt back then and what we feel now. Artists such as James Brown, Sam Cooke, Pete Seeger, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan made it possible to express their feelings towards different controversial situations presented at the time through song which, I believe, helped society stay strong along the way.
Throughout our history, music has constantly been influenced by trends of its time, reflecting social, economic and political changes. On the other hand, music has defined the culture and social events or leading them to social revolution. For instance, guys like Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder greatly contributed to social events. Such leaders and musical revolutionaries have existed throughout history.

Music defines our culture. As Americans, we listen to music while we drive our cars, are at work, doing housework, studying, etc. We have songs for special occasions: Christmas, Hanukah, birthdays, weddings, parties, etc. We have taken songs from the various cultures that make us diverse: Arabic, German, Mexican, Native American, etc. We have many genres: country, hip-hop, rap, pop, blues, jazz, rock, heavy metal, etc. And although we may think of music as simple and easy, looking at all this makes one realize how diverse and complex our music truly is. Two things that contribute to this diversity are theme and symbolism.
The creation of so many new instruments and the development of wind bands have changed how music is made and seen in history. People started to play in military bands, and it became a career and a job someone could get paid for and make a living off of (PBS). Now there are professional bands and symphonies that professional musicians can play in as their jobs. The music industry has grown so much, and there are so many opportunities for all kinds of musicians in America now, and that would not have happened if from the beginning people like John Philip Sousa wouldn’t have taken a risk and created that first professional band. Things like the creation and development of instruments and the growing amounts of wind bands really made people realize how important music was, and from there it has grown tremendously. Now people have so many opportunities to make a living off of music, and many people get the chance to learn about it throughout their years in school, which ultimately benefits people in so many
Music plays a huge role in the structure of a society. It can have both negative and positive influence on cultures and communities. First, musical sounds and instruments can be a dividing factor between the people within the same culture. These opposing social and economic identities within these cultures can lead unnecessary animosity between the members. However, music can also be one of the forces that unite members of a culture and provide a sense pride for everyone. This makes it easier for people to display their identification to that culture.

¨Music is shown to be beneficial to students in four major categories: success in society, success in school, success in developing intelligence, and success in life¨ (Petress). This quote talks about many of the social benefits that arts education can have throughout the lives of the young students. Some of the benefits from early exposure to arts and music in public schools are academic success, and more significant brain development. ¨According to Shirley Brice Heath, researcher at the Stanford University and Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, arts education has an enormous impact on the lives of children¨ (Petress). Many studies have proven that students who participate in the arts in school have been positive impacted by doing so. Many examples of the impacts that the arts have on students´ lives are that they are more likely to be rewarded for academic achievement and are more likely to be elected in class offices. Many students who have participated in the arts also are more likely to be awarded for creative writing, more likely to participate in math or science fairs and are likely to have perfect school attendance.
