In “The Crucible”,John Proctor fits the definition of a tragic hero because although he could’ve confessed and lied about him doing witchcraft, he kept his word and denied it knowing that death was a consequence. He didn’t confess to the jury because he understood that the whole problem started with him and Abigail the day he committed a sin of adultery with her.

John Proctor was a hero because although the consequences he faced were very bad and could affect him badly he kept his word and accepted his sins. Moreover, he cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail and that was a very bad sin in the Puritan way of life back then. Although it was a very bad sin John Proctor still confessed about what happened with Abigail to the court and accepted the consequences. However, The court later on wanted him to confess and say he was doing witchcraft and was seeing the devil but he kept his word and didn’t lie about it and remained loyal to god and himself. …show more content…

However, Proctor didn’t tell the court at first because he didn’t want everyone to know about his sins he committed and about him cheating on Elizabeth, but later on told the court about everything and confessed to the adultery. He then told the court that they were not doing witchcraft that they were just dancing and doing something they shouldn’t have and that the whole witchcraft story was a lie they made up. The court was not hanging the people that confessed to it and that's the reason why most of the people other than the girls confessed but John Proctor didn’t confess to witchcraft because he knew the whole town would believe it if a man like him
