Controversy of School Uniforms Parents, students, and schools all disagree about school uniforms. Each school uniform can be composed differently. Some schools have color collared shirts that have the school’s mascot and/or name on them. Most schools go with the common uniform of navy, black, or khaki bottoms consisting of a white or navy top with a collar. Some other dress code rules could be required belt if the garment has belt loops, shirts must be tucked in, shorts/skirts must be mid-thigh or longer, and clothing that is too tight or loose is not appropriate for school (School Uniforms). Is the child really thinking about others? During class a student’s attention may be on someone else’s choice of clothing. The student may be wearing something that reveals too much, has bad pictures/words etc. Also, behavior at school depends on how you are dressed. If one is well dressed then one is going to behave well. For example, high school prom everyone is well dressed. Girls are in dresses and guys are in tuxes. “If someone were to come into a building, the intruder could be easily recognized” (ProCon). The theory of school uniforms helps the faculty recognize who is and who is not supposed to be in or around the building. Another form of safety with uniforms is, it will be harder to steal or carry a weapon. Individuals will sag his or her pants to get away with stealing or carrying a weapon around. The students and staff can feel safe if everyone is wearing the same clothing. On the opposing side of having school uniforms some opponent’s think it is best to not have uniforms. They argue that having school uniforms takes away from a student’s individuality. He or she is not allowed to be his or herself and be different. Students cannot wear clothes they are comfortable to sit in a classroom in for seven hours a day. When students are allowed individuality, they can explore what their strengths and weaknesses are.
