The Characters of Curley and Lennie in Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck 'Curley stepped over to Lennie like a terrier. "What the hell you laughing at Lennie looked blankly at him "Huh?" Then Curley's rage exploded. "Come on ya big bastard, get up on your feet. No big son of a bitch is gonna laugh at me. I'll show ya who's yella." This quote depicts Curley as an intimidating and obnoxious character. Curley is also furious because he assumed that Lennie was smiling about the situation in hand. However, Lennie was visualising, as he often did, about the dream he had just been discussing with George and Candy. 'Lennie was still smiling in delight at the memory of the ranch' This attack on Lennie reveals Curley's own frustration over his relationship with his new wife, who he had come looking for, once again. Earlier on in the chapter, Curley had been searching for his wife; Steinbeck described the scene: 'Curley burst into the room excitedly. "Any you guys seen my wife?". . . Curley looked threateningly about the room. "Where the hell's Slim?" All the men know that Curley thinks Slim's with his wife. Curley's wife was always giving men the eye and "finds it difficult to keep away from the guys", this makes Curley suspicious of all the men on the ranch. Candy said that Curley's problem was that he 'Thinks Slim's with his wife, don't he?' this suggests that Curley is feeling jealous. Furthermore, Curley is short and he might think that his wife is physically attracted to the men on the ranch, as they are bigger than him, this would also make Curley resent them. When Lennie and George arrived to find work on the ranch Curley asked them questions which only George answered and this antagonised Curly. "An you won't let the big guy talk, is that it?" 'Curley stared at Lennie levelly, "Well we jus come in," Lennie said softly' "Well nex' time you answer when your spoke to" Candy tells Lennie and George that Curly was a Lightweight boxer and
