There are many topics of concern in nursing; one of the more concerning topics being hospice practice. Hospice tends to be one of those topics people steer away from because its associated with death and dying. Death is a hard subject for our patients and their families to grasp because they do not want to let their loved ones go. This topic is hard even for some nurses because we are taught to cure diseases and help people get better, but with hospice this is not the case. With hospice practice it is focused on the comfort of the patient and the family in their last months of life, rather than healing them and sending them home cured.

Explaining to the family and patient the benefits of hospice and giving them the option of trying out hospice for three months often can change their perspective. Giving the family a little information and taking the time to discuss all of their concerns can benefit the patient and the family as a whole. He was only my nurse I followed for a day and he changed my outlook on hospice with the 8 hours I was with him. Seeing how he honestly cares for each patient and will go to extremes to ensure they are comfortable and are receiving what they need to stay comfortable, truly made me want to do the same for my patients. At the end of that day I sat down with my clinical group and told them that I think I want to be a hospice nurse, and it was all because I had an amazing experience with my nurse. Hospice practice may have a negative look on the outside to some people but all it takes is for someone to have a positive experience to change their entire view of it.
