In the past few decades we have seen many advances in medicine and the treatment of injuries whether they be broken bones or torn ligaments. Along with that, we have seen an increase in massage therapy use. Unfortunately, there are many people who are unaware of the benefit that a massage can have on the body. Whether they are a college student, men, women, pregnant women, elderly, or people with injuries. Most job-related injuries are result in strain on muscles or joints. Massage is still not considered to be common knowledge yet even though most people have a general idea of what a massage is. The general public also assumes that massages are just meant to relax the body but they can do so much more.

For example, people in pain, stress, pregnant women, and people sitting at desks for long periods of time can benefit. People can see changes right after the first massage such as pain relief or less stress. People might also see more flexibility. People that work at computers all day are prone to some adverse effects such as neck, shoulder, or wrist pain (Dalton, 2014). In this day in age we see up to 15 million people who work at computers in America (Dalton, 2014). When people are unable to attain a full and restful sleep then they may become irritable, less focused, or even hallucinations (Shinde et al, 2014). There are three side effects that are beneficial. These are: release of muscle tension, increased blood circulation and initiation of relaxation response (Shinde et al, 2014). In patients in hospitals that are in ICU (intensive care unit), many of them have disturbed sleep and do not sleep very well (Shinde et al, 2014). In a study done on the 12th April to 15th May 2013 in Jabalpur Hospital and Research Centre and Bhandari Hospital, Jabalpur on 30 patients that were in ICU they performed back massages between 8-9 pm for about 10 minutes (Shinde et al, 2014). Another 30 patients from the same hospitals were in the control group and did not receive a massage.
