A Brief History of Texas Longhorns
Driving through Texas, one might see many types of livestock. Upon these types of livestock are cattle. From the Chick-fil-a cow to Elmer the bull, the bovine species take up a wide range of American soil. One of the most distinguishable breeds are the Texas Longhorns with their gorgeous features and long history.
With over 500 cattle breeds, Texas Longhorns are one most acknowledged cattle. Longhorns were brought from Spain to the United States in the 1400s on Columbus's expedition. They lived as feral cattle for 300 years. After their domestication in the south, the cattle were driven north for slaughter. In the 1800s, the Longhorns were crossbred with Shorthorns and Herefords. America’s Team Will the real “America’s Team” please stand up? This term is widely used throughout the media when referring to the Dallas Cowboys. “America’s Team” was first coined some 40 years ago while introducing them for a feature film by the legendary sport writer Bob Ryan. In the following years, because of their success and mass media exposure they were a team that America as a nation could identify with ,so the name stuck. The Cowboys since those days has regressed into a very mediocre team who only looks for moral instead of actual Super Bowl victories.
The King Ranch The King Ranch, 825,000 acres right here in the great state of Texas! The King Ranch started as a small cow camp in 1853, no one knew how big it would soon become in later years. Richard King started the small camp with 15,500 acres, the ranch is now 825,000 acres full of some of the finest cattle and horses in the world. Each year, more than 35,000 people go to Kingsville, Texas to visit the ranch.

It’s been a long, wet winter in northern California, badly needed to end the drought, but dark and dreary, never the less. Sugar Bowl Ski Area has received over 62 feet of snow thus far, while my parents’ home in Grass Valley has had over 100 inches of rain, far surpassing the previous record of 82 inches. Everyone is grateful for the bountiful rainfall saturating the earth and fueling an explosion of green wherever one looks, but five months into the deluge, most of the region’s inhabitants are understandably desperate for sunshine and the promise of spring.
A beautiful city full of life and joy is the best way to describe South Bend, Indiana. A vast 100,000 citizens strong, South Bend is a well diverse community. From Coahuila Mexico, over 20 years ago my parents moved to this city to provide our family with a better life. Just like everything else in life, South Bend continues to change by the minute. It is full of improvements and developments to grow into a larger and better known city. As beautiful as South Bend is to me, South Bend is like Chicago in the eyes of a foreigner.
Imagine waking up to beautiful freshwater streams and wildlife foraging through the mountainside. This is what citizens of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee get to wake up to ever day. Pigeon Forge is a small town near the border of South Carolina. It sits along the edge of the Cherokee National Forest and on the west side of Little Pigeon River. It is not only located in a beautiful area, but also a thriving area economically speaking. Overall, Pigeon Forge is a family friendly place where people can not only live in a beautiful city, but also exciting environment.
Over 1,000,000 cattle roamed the open range. At this time, people in the north had money to buy beef and cattle which was in great demand. A cow that cost 4 to5 dollars a head in Texas was going for 40 to 50 dollars a head in the east. Ranchers hired cowboys for the cattle drives north, realizing the great opportunity for a large profit if they could reach the railroads in Abilene, Kansas.

Rodeo is more common in the western part of The United States. It is also an official sport in the states of Texas, Wyoming, Montana, and Texas. Rodeo originated from working cowboys out west who roped calves for doctoring purposes and rode bucking horses to train them to help work the farms of the west. There are a wide variety of rules and regulations that rodeo contractors have to abide by. Most of them make sure the animals are treated properly and the riders or ropers are kept safe. The rules and regulations vary from state to state. Some states may have more strict rules than another. Some states like California protects the timed event livestock more and they will not allow you to use probes with electricity when an animal is in the chutes. Other states like Ohio will focus more on the rough stock and will not allow any probes in bucking straps and unpadded bucking straps that go on the flank of bucking stock.
The seemingly simple term “rancher” is commonly misinterpreted. The term rancher may bring to mind a guy riding a bucking bull or horse in a western movie or maybe a tough looking guy without much brains raising cattle on the prairie. Other people think of a farmer. Actual ranchers specifically raise cattle, while farmers raise crops, hogs, and poultry. Modern ranchers are hardworking men and women who live off the land raising cattle for consumers. Despite popular beliefs, it takes a lot of knowledge to raise cattle. American ranchers use business and technology skills to raise cattle. Even with these skills, they are still at the mercy of Mother Nature and gamble with her every year.
Southeastern University is a private, Co-ed, Christian university. SEU’s main focus is to equip their students to be a next generation of leaders so that they can enter the real world as influential servants to their careers and communities. Southeastern university offers a plentiful amount of study programs, even the program I am interested in which is Human services. I selected this school First because it is a Christian college, and Second because of the programs of study. I chose to go to a Christian college because I grew up in a Christian household and because I believe in Jesus. I also chose Southeastern University because of the programs of study. SEU was one of the few colleges that had a program of study that I was interested in.

There are many reasons why I would like to go on this Gonzaga Outreach program. The main reason is because I would like to get more connected with the Gonzaga community since this is my first year and I still have many more people to meet. Yet I want to go on this trip because I want give back to the people that don’t have much but learn how I can become more open to things and live a more simply life.
Most cow lovers need not worry about any of this. Their cows have become welcome household pets. They have put down their steak knives and decided to dine with them, not on them. Such docile animals have now become a part of the family, and owning but a few cows has eased the problem of naming a vast herd of cattle.
Dairy cattle are cattle that are bred for milk production purposes instead of meat and then used for dairy production. Most of Bos taurus or temperate dairy cattle are known as the popular breeds for dairy, such as Friesian-Holstein which rank the first among the dairy breeds. In Malaysia, the imported temperate dairy cattle reared in Malaysia can cause many problems such as can cause heat stress to the cattle since Malaysia is a hot and humid country, unlike the temperate countries.
