America’s Team
Will the real “America’s Team” please stand up? This term is widely used throughout the media when referring to the Dallas Cowboys. “America’s Team” was first coined some 40 years ago while introducing them for a feature film by the legendary sport writer Bob Ryan. In the following years, because of their success and mass media exposure they were a team that America as a nation could identify with ,so the name stuck. The Cowboys since those days has regressed into a very mediocre team who only looks for moral instead of actual Super Bowl victories. Their owner’s thirst for television coverage and eternal relevance has given him the nickname “The Ringmaster.” Enter New England Patriots. The Dallas Cowboys is owned by Mr. Jerry Jones. He is the owner, president and general manager of the organization. Mr. Jones takes it upon himself to be involved in every aspect of his organization. This organizational structure is very different to the conventional NFL structure where the general manager, president and owner are usually three different persons who report to each other in that order.This structure allows Mr. Jones to make moves where he only in principle has to answer to himself. This actually worked well for him in the early and successful years of the franchise because there were coaches who actually held Mr. Jones in check. Craft was a season ticket holder who always dreamed of owning the team. Talk about the American Dream. The president is Johnathan Craft his son and the General Manager is Bill Belichick ,also the head coach. This arrangement gives the head coach full control over who he has playing under him. The organization does not deal in hype at all. Some circles call them the “CIA” of football because they never divulge the full details of what is going on with the team where their players or any issues are concerned. Bellichick and Craft are both on the same page when it comes to how they want to accomplish their goals and that ties into their successful run. Their cohesion also explains his long tenure with the team (fifteen years), compared to the four coaches the Cowboys have had within that same time span.
Success at the highest level is what really determines the value of the team. It is the reason fans fill the stadiums or turn them into ghost towns. If you were to look up success in the NFL one would probably see a picture of the Patriots. Six trips to the Super Bowl, fourteen winning records, and making the playoffs fourteen out of fifteen times within a fifteen year period are all hallmarks of their success. Comparing that to the Cowboys’ one playoff win, zero Super Bowl appearances, and five winning records within that same time span really shows which team has enjoyed more
