Technology is a drug. A drug forms an addiction that becomes hard to break. Society has adopted technology like it is second nature. Newborns watch Mickey Mouse in restaurants on iPads, children listen to music on iPods throughout the day, and teenagers communicate on phones constantly. Much like a drug addiction, when a child develops an addiction to technology at a young age, it can be hard to break. Not only has technology influenced activities outside of school, but it has also influenced activities in the classroom. Before making a school technologically advanced in curriculum and instruction, the school must consider the educational benefits, the impact on social skills, and the departure from traditions. Face-to-face interaction has been replaced with screen interaction: texting, messaging, or emailing. Being a victim in this technology ridden world, I have personally replaced face-to-face conversations with my teachers by sending an email off of my macbook that has been provided through a program called “Power-Up.” Having access to my teachers at home ensures my access and aid to the understanding of my assignments. As Kevin J. Delaney quoted, “the educators are beginning to interact with students, parents, and each other in ways they never have before” (Source B). The downside of technology is that it limits creativity, social skills, and imagination. School systems need to be aware that “children are living in an information-rich, time compressed environment that often seems to stifle a child’s imagination rather than stimulate it” (Source C). Students will eventually embark on their own journey outside of school, and they must exhibit the fundamental social skills in order to succeed. Sitting behind a screen 24/7 restricts imagination, and hinders a child from experiencing events through their own eyes. Although technology reaps many social benefits, it also stifles imagination, and the school system must determine which option holds more
