In all movies – whether they are dramatic, romantic, or even comedic – there is a unique symbol that ties the movie together by highlighting one particular element. In Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, drowning emphasizes the increasing struggle of Robert Angier and corresponds with his increasingly sporadic decisions, making the audience empathize with the sense of panic he feels. First, from an analytic standpoint, it is important to recognize that the way someone feels when they are drowning is representative of Angier’s mindset after the death of his wife. When you consider, that drowning person’s goal is to breathe and Angier’s goal was to acquire closure for the death of his wife, the metaphor that drowning was representative of Angier’s life comes into full effect. As soon as Angier achieved his goal, he relinquished his life. This is directly consequential of his search of vengeance. If he had not set up Fallon and lead to him being hanged, Alfred would have never bothered to kill Angier. In fact, Alfred was the twin who proposed simply leaving Robert alone. As viewers begin to recognize this, they realize the full impact of his death. It also adds another stratum to the analogy of drowning. Since water is the reason, in the end the victim of drowning dies, it would only be fitting to equate Julia’s death to the water. Meaning, she, though indirectly, was the reason was the cause of Angier’s death. This may seem dubious at first, but one must consider that the reason any conflict happened was because Julia could not slip out of the knot she agreed to be tied with. When this comes to the attention of the viewer, they are forced to go back and reconsider every part of the plot – not just the scenes pertaining to the Bordens.
