Shutting it down would've had a ripple effect on the entire health care community. Without Grady, profit margins at other hospitals would be gone. It would’ve been akin to shutting Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and would have ramifications for decades. So Grady launched its new campaign, one of its goals being to introduce a broader patient population to Grady. Translation: paying patients. They hired an outside advertising firm at an anticipated cost of $100,000 that year, which helped craft a new slogan: “Atlanta can’t live without Grady.” Unveiled was a string of black and white content advertisements, thirty seconds to a minute and a half long, of patients who were near death, but saved thanks to the heroic efforts of Grady’s staff and physicians. Many of them were compelling, tearful and gut wrenching. One featured a middle-aged man named Charles Armbrust and his wife who sat very close by his side, staring loving over at him.
