Many students, regardless of whether they attend public or private school, are being criticized for their lack of literacy. According to Michael Skube’s article, “Read this—and then weep for the future,” students aren’t reading and this is negatively influencing their ability to read and write. Without proper literacy skills, students won’t be able to read and write proficiently.

One of the main factors reflecting the students’ poor reading skills is their inability to comprehend complex vocabulary. Reading is supposed to help students learn new words they’re not familiar with. Since many students don’t read, their vocabulary becomes limited. For example, when Skube mentions “impetus” in a class presentation at Midwestern University, the presenter didn’t understand what the word means. As the decline in reading increases, students will have difficulty understanding words they don’t recognize. When students don’t read their writing skills become affected as well because students won’t have enough words to choose to display their mastery of vocabulary. …show more content…

In private institutions, students are provided with high quality education and expected to succeed in reading and writing compared to their high school counterpart. Ironically, students of private schools also have poor literacy skills and don’t seek for improvement. For instance, in Skube’s article, students from public and private schools are suspects of receiving inflating grades from their poor literacy. As long as the students feel confident of earning dishonest grades, they will continue to believe that reading isn’t significant to improve writing.
