Health and Stress: Intervention and Prevention

Stress can affect everyone physically and mentally. According to research, stress can be either good or bad. Stress can be helpful in increasing a person’s motivation towards completing their goals (Jo Machant, 2013). Stress can also increase a person’s physical ability. For example, stress can increase a runner’s ability to run faster through the release of adrenaline. This type of good stressed is called eustress (Jo Machant, 2013)). However, too much stress can do the opposite. This bad stress, known as distress, can cause health problems such as bleeding ulcers, migraines, and heart disease This type of stress can also cause mental health issues such as anxiety and panic disorders. In this case prevention means to stop stress from happening, while intervening with stress means taking active steps to improve the stressful situation when prevention is not an option. Determining one’s level of stress can assist in forming the correct intervention and prevention strategy. Secondary interventions are used to decrease the cause of the stressor. This leads into yet another example of intervention which is positive thinking. Stress is often connected with negative thinking. This type of negative thinking decreases the chance of self-actualization. If a person focuses on positive thoughts about themselves, their accomplishments, or things they’re proud of or grateful for, it can go a long way towards relieving stress. A final example of an intervention for stress is participating in pleasant activities. This can be any type of recreational activity that is enjoyable and provides a healthy distraction from stress. Some active forms of physical activity, such as playing basketball, can release chemicals in the body that naturally relax a person and give them a sense of calm and happiness.

Using prevention and intervention in dealing with stress requires another key ingredient: time management. Being able to organize and plan your day is an efficient way to balance the amount of time and energy used to address a stressor. A person that is able to use this tool knows how to manage when stress begins to reach dangerously high levels. According to research, people who are less stressful adjust their lives by using positive interventions.
