Hi Kaitlyn! I am involved in Greek life as well, so I can relate to this! I agree that a huge strength within a sorority are those members who are truly dedicated to their chapter, especially the board members, they are the ones who keep the organization running smoothly (most of the time). A major weakness for a sorority could also be those members who are not as dedicate. I feel like every sorority and fraternity have those members who only care about the social status, and it seems like those are the ones that constantly break the rules and ruin their reputation and put the entire chapter in danger of being put on probation or even kicked off campus. While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. While I am not good at sticking up for myself, something this book has made me feel is crucial to blend in and conform to an ideal to fit into a sorority, I am too opinionated. There are not many sororities (at least shown in Pledged) that welcome girls who are different, preferring to stay similar. One of the many forms of dangerous pressures girls face from their membership in a sorority is body image. Being a member of an organization with typically 100 women opens the door for pressure to conform to a certain ideal look. Forms of hazing often would include activities that brought down the girls’ self-confidence. “During circle the fat, pledges undress and, one by one, stand in front of the entire sorority membership. The sisters (or, in some chapters, fraternity brothers) then use thick black markers to circle the fat or cellulite on a pledge’s body....For many sororities, thinness, as the pledges discover, is a priority” (Robbins 259). When you are a senior is high school your main focuses are finishing your college applications and if your a girl of course prom, you don't realize you are a year away from entering college and the world of "rape culture". It is said that rape culture exists because we don't believe it does. Rape culture is defined as "an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture." We already have an idea that in colleges where sports is glorified that some professors will allow athletes to get away with numerous things from cheating to missing numerous classes but fraternity events can be high risk for rape. First I will summarize "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?" written by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Space. Then I will use information from my criminology class to better define violent crime . Lastly, I will explain rape on campuses is not a cultural component. Colleges should hold clubs such as fraternities and sports to the same level than others and be harshly punished for crimes they commit so they don't feel more superior and think they can get away with rape.
Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
It brings me great displeasure to write this appeal due to the circumstances of my unwarranted suspension from a fraternity I hold dear to my heart. I became a member of the fall 2015 class falling in love with both my brothers and the fraternity. The past year I formed an unbreakable bond and accumulated numeral unforgettable experiences. I constantly had to battle people who thought that I had nothing better to offer than the general stereotypes. I once had a professor that said to me “For being a sorority girl I expected less but you have surprised me.” A positive yet back handed comment, I took it graciously. Fraternities are places where brotherhoods are made and friends last a lifetime. When People join a fraternity you're making a lifetime commitment to a brotherhood. Most people that join a fraternity as a freshman in college are looking somewhere to fit in and be accepted by people so they can take their minds about other problems in their life. However fraternities have bad reps mainly against women. Fraternities are misogynistic, because they are always doing cruel acts against women like rape , being disrespectful, shouting out obscene chants that can be taken to personal level, and a wide variety of things that is to long to be listed in which it all promotes misogyny in which we need to stand up for and come together to stop it.
