It brings me great displeasure to write this appeal due to the circumstances of my unwarranted suspension from a fraternity I hold dear to my heart. I became a member of the fall 2015 class falling in love with both my brothers and the fraternity. The past year I formed an unbreakable bond and accumulated numeral unforgettable experiences. I even got the pleasure to read The Phoenix and enjoy the beautiful and adventurous history of our fraternity. This all came to a shattering halt when the alumni of the ILBE Chapter persecuted for violating our Membership Agreement. Without excuse or complaint I have met and even surpassed these requirements. I earned a 3.25 GPA. I have paid my dues the entire year without late payment. I attended all ritual events and only missed one chapter meeting falling well within the attendance policy. I am an active member of the Pre-Law Club and the Political Science Club. I have completed 10 hours of community service by donating blood in Champaign and being a server at a Hospital Fundraiser, I have never done anything to harm the house and have never been summoned to a Judicial Board meeting. I have endured two interviews now and the alumni have not granted exemption for my violation even when they have gone into the details of how my life exemplifies the ideal brother. However the members I am going to live with only lived in the fraternity house for two semesters (also violating the membership agreement) and the new members that are living in next year only plan to live in the house for two semesters, as well. Our chapter has adapted to the policy due to our circumstances we have found ourselves in. Our house only has space for 40 people and the fall new member classes are sizes up to 30 or more brothers and our recent spring class was 17. This leaves little space for any two classes to live in. If every member had to live in four semesters than we would not have space for the newest class to move in. There is a clear flaw in our membership agreement. I recognize there are methods to have the membership agreement revised and accept responsibility on behalf of the chapter that we have not stepped up and sought those revisions out. While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. While I am not good at sticking up for myself, something this book has made me feel is crucial to blend in and conform to an ideal to fit into a sorority, I am too opinionated. There are not many sororities (at least shown in Pledged) that welcome girls who are different, preferring to stay similar. Some students in School had big issues, like Doug Hann. Hann was a student from Brown University, and varsity football player at the University. He was living in the dorms at the University. He was expelled from the university for doing bulling to the black people. In October 18, 1990, Hann was screaming bad words towards the black people, he was celebrating his birthday and he was drunk. It was not the first time that Hann was caught saying inappropriate words to the people, 2 years before he was drunk at one bar and he curse scream words to a black people. The previous semester, which was my first semester at Howard’s University, was hindered, because of the new environment and different style of teaching. Being homesick also prevented me from meeting my set goals for academic progress. It was my first experience studying at a college level within America, although that is not an excuse for my shortcomings, it does briefly explain how I had trouble learning the academic standard at Howard. When you are a senior is high school your main focuses are finishing your college applications and if your a girl of course prom, you don't realize you are a year away from entering college and the world of "rape culture". It is said that rape culture exists because we don't believe it does. Rape culture is defined as "an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture." We already have an idea that in colleges where sports is glorified that some professors will allow athletes to get away with numerous things from cheating to missing numerous classes but fraternity events can be high risk for rape. First I will summarize "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?" written by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Space. Then I will use information from my criminology class to better define violent crime . Lastly, I will explain rape on campuses is not a cultural component. Colleges should hold clubs such as fraternities and sports to the same level than others and be harshly punished for crimes they commit so they don't feel more superior and think they can get away with rape.

In "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture" Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade analyze the social perspective of the gendered relations in male fraternities that add to the high rate of violence against women on many college campuses. They list a host of factors that distinguish higher-risk from lower-risk atmospheres discussing the rates of rape in colleges and state how "1 out of 4 college women say they were raped or experienced an attempted rape" (217). Additionally, "1 out of 12 college men say they forced a woman to have sexual intercourse against her will" (Boswell, Spade 217). In other words Boswell and Spade indicated that the rates were high when it came down to women getting raped in colleges by men who also attended those colleges. In addition, Boswell and Spade specify in how most people are aware of rape but know very little about rape culture (Boswell, Spade 217).
n my violation of the Aggie Code of Honor, I took the risk of taking an unfair advantage over my classmates to maximize an exam grade. My ultimate failure was deciding to cheat for the betterment of my grade over studying harder and working for my own grade. The wrong plan in my situation would be to ignore all reasoning and continue to act unethical and cheat on further exams. This would obviously would be idiotic. Walking up dilapidated stairs, my friend and I enter into the chapter room of Beta Sigma Psi, where the Little Sisters of the Gold Rose meets every week. The fraternity house smells of stale beer and sweat, and has clear signs of past parties and shenanigans. However, we have officially become activated members of the service sorority and were attending our first chapter meeting with the entire sorority. In that chapter room we discussed future service events, volunteering opportunities, and then went around the room for anyone to share news and announcements with the group. I am writing this essay to represent my knowledge of the current school residential rules and regulations that I have broken on multiple occasions. I was told to write this essay due to my lack of education on the rules regarding residential life guest and visitation, residential lif noise quiet hours violations, residential life keys and registration, and residential life compliance which lead to me breaking the rule on campus. On November 18th, 2015, the UMBC peer review council met to hear my case arising from my November 4, 2015 charge letter. Here I was found guilty for all the charges against me. On this campus, my main focus should be to do well in my classes and learn from my experiences. Causing trouble throughout residential buildings should not be a part of any of the action that I have came to school for. To show my understanding of the rules and regulations that I have broken I will state the rules I have went against and show I have went against them, I will also state the consequences given to me and show how these incidents have affected my life on campus directly.
