In the novel 1984, written by George Orwell, there is a place called Oceania where the government is Big Brother. The government, the Party, and the Thought Police are constantly oppressing the citizens of Oceania. Most of the people don't know that they are being oppressed, but the two main characters, Julia and Winston, realize the oppression and don't stand for it. Winston and Julia absolutely hate the Party, and are constant breaking its “rules”. Julia is self-centered and resists the Party by doing rebellious acts that only affect her in a positive way. In 1984, George Orwell presents an overly controlled society that is run by Big Brother. The protagonist, Winston, attempts to “stay human” in the face of a dehumanizing, totalitarian regime. Big Brother possesses so much control over these people that even the most natural thoughts such as love and sex are considered taboo and are punishable. Big Brother has taken this society and turned each individual against one another. At the heart of the Internet culture is a force that wants to find out everything about you. In 2010 Microsoft published a report that stated that 75 percent of United States recruiters and human resource professionals that they surveyed are not only checking online sources to learn about potential candidates, but they also reported that their companies have made online screening a formal requirement before hiring any candidates. Of the recruiters and human resource professionals surveyed 70 percent say they rejected candidates based on information found on social media site. This has lead so many people’s awareness about online privacy and the need to control public access to private accounts by online privacy settings in order to protect they online and real world reputation. There have been legal suits against many sites and employer’s over the invasion of privacy on the internet. The authenticity of what the recruiters find on these social media sites should be questioned.

The government gives each American citizen a set of unalienable rights that protect them from the government’s power. These rights cannot be broken, yet the government violates the Fourth Amendment daily to find ways to spy on the American public under the guise of protecting against terrorism. In 2007 President Obama said the American administration “acts like violating civil liberties is the way to enhance our securities – it is not.” Americans need to understand that their privacy is worth the fight. The people need to tell their neighbors, their congressmen, and their senators that they will not allow their internet privacy to be violated by needless spying. American citizens deserve the rights given to them and need to fight for the right to keep them by changing privacy laws to include Internet privacy.
The aim of this study was to investigate individual’s behavior around privacy issues and factors affecting it. For this purpose, a research model was developed with external factors (age, gender and profession) and the factors privacy concern, attitude and audience awareness influencing audience behavior.
