Arnold Mendoza Mrs.Leite H English 10-4 April 17, 2016 Dialectical Journal: 1984 by George Orwell Entry 1: Book 1, Chapter 1; 5-20 Summary The book is set in Airstrip One (current day London), Oceania dated 1984. The main protagonist, Winston Smith, is introduced as a middle aged worker in the Records Department at the Ministry of Truth. 1984’s society is driven by a totalitarian government, the Party, under its alleged leader Big Brother. The Party had great control and influence over the society: as telescreens were installed on every single corner in which people are monitored and propaganda ran 24/7. In his home, Winston was able to locate an area where he was not seen by the telescreens: the alcove. Despite knowing the consequence of punishable death, Winston began to write a diary. In the midst of writing his diary, Winston She passes him a note that wrote “I love you.” Winston shows a desire; he himself had always had a thought of her. After 2 days, Winston and the girl were able to meet. She had given Winston the location where they could meet again. The two were able to meet away from the telescreen unsupervised. The girl revealed herself as Julia. Winston and Julia made love. Winston sees Julia as a great partner for the rebellion. The two arranged meetings where and when they would meet again. Julia reveals that she is not interested in the revolt. Although, she is a personal rebel. Winston returned to Mr. Charrington’s offer: he had rented the room above his shop in order to spend some private time with Julia. Winston reveals his fear of rats.
