Sports In School Should Be Cut

Dear Aurora Public School Board of Education, As you guys are aware of the APS school district is in a huge debt. Decision are being made on whether to or not to cut certain activities in school. Sports are at the top of the list of this cut. In this essay I will argue that sports in school should be cut. Even though some people may object the fact that sports are a good for students, but I will argue that sports take up so much opportunities in the school district.
Initially, sports in school should be cancelled due to the failing in academics. To being with schools in the APS district are proven to be in the top 10% of the worst test results. A huge amount of kids are obviously being distracted by something not a small portion affecting …show more content…

In the article “8 things you should know about sports scholarships”by Lynn O'Shaughnessy she states, “Only about 2 percent of high school athletes win sports scholarships every year at NCAA colleges and universities.” There is such a small opportunity for kids to get recognized and even if they do there's always someone who tops them. So therefore why spend so much money on sports when only 2% of students get a scholarship to play in college. There is no guarantee that a child who verbally commits to a team will end up on it. This is because a coach might change his mind, and found someone who could work better in the position he would of had the child who committed. As Lynn O'Shaughnessy says in the same article 8 Things you should know about Sports Scholarships,“ ''There is no guarantee that a child who verbally commits to a team will end up on it. A coach can change his mind about a prospect. '' Coming back to the two percent who actually play college sports. There are many clubs or league's around the Aurora Public School district. Although the payments are a lot more than school payments which are 33 right now at Columbia middle school, that's another option. League's or clubs have practices for 2 or 3 times a week. The APS district helps on putting the rest of the money for after school activities after payments are put in by the students which don't even cover half. As the district has to figure out transportation with the fees of driving the students to and back from school, the equipment and the refs. Even if the fees were doubled for the amount of money each student has to pay it still wouldn't cover as much. “By suspending sports, Singleton realized, he could save $150,000 in one year. Mind you this is a very small populated town in Texas”what's happening in this small ranching community where the school district is taking desperate measures to prevent a state-mandated closure’’. This is affecting schools all over the area. Even Florida and New York school districts have cut off sports. According to Repairs at school are one of the most important things to take care of, for safety reasons, and more. The budgets schools have are so tight being the reason to having to cut sports.
