When we come to the realization that creativity is not a gift, akin to the mythical “photographer’s eye” we can then develop our creativity and inspiration and also our photographers eye can be developed. We need to make time to do this, much like making time to go to the gym to exercise the other muscles in our body. This is going to require discipline on our part. Creativity won’t just happen. It is something we must continually develop and nourish. We will never improve our photography by daydreaming about buying more or better gear, travelling to famous locations or asking “What settings?” while we browse online photo sharing sites. We live in an instant access on demand world, but there is no fast track to becoming creative. We are all born creative, but few of us are able to retain that creativity as we get older. And we end up like just another mouse in the maze. A rat in the rat race. Chances are good that we will never be the best and there will always be somebody that comes along who is better then us at any pursuit. Why? Those who surpass the best have taken the seeds sown by the forefathers of any craft, and pushed those seeds to new heights. They study harder, look at every detail in more depth and create things thought unobtainable by the forefathers of the craft. They embrace learning. They do not chase results. They are fully conscious that results are the consequence of learning. Someone somewhere will always put more effort into each aspect then we are willing to put forth. Yet we need not be jealous. It is a learning opportunity for us. A chance for introspection to observe where we may improve our skills. Improvement should be our only goal. The results become a by product of committing to taking action to improve. The only we will improve is when we DO. Not daydream.
