Sparta’s Strengths and Weaknesses Education is always the most important thing for successful societies. Sparta, however, lacked horribly in education and valued military strength more. Instead of growing people's minds, they trained and killed. Sparta’s weakness definitely outweigh its strengths. I believe this because Sparta lacked in education, took young boys away from their families, and they would kill innocent people because they thought they were “weak”. To begin, The weaknesses outweigh the strengths because of the lack of education. The children were taught only the basics of reading and writing and only for practical reasons. The text states that all other forms of education were banned. No one was allowed to go abroad and study other cultures because Sparta was afraid of people hearing of other laws and beliefs. Sparta only valued military strength rather than education and intellectual strength. This was probably one of the biggest reasons that Sparta fell. Another reason that the weaknesses outweigh the strengths is that they took young boys away from their families. At seven years old, boys would be taken away to be put in the “agoge”. The agoge was military training that boys would be in for thirteen years before being put into the actual army. Sparta barely gave anyone a chance. They would kill babies right off the bat if they “weren’t strong enough. They did not wait for them to grow up to see if they would be strong.
