In my creative writing project for English 9, I chose to make a series of six letters between two characters from the books Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Son of the Mob by Korman Gordon. The two characters I chose were Romeo Montague from Romeo and Juliet, and Vince Luca from Son of the Mob. In the letters, I have the two boys talk about their lives. As Romeo is dead already, I have the two boys focus mainly on Vince’s life. Romeo offers countless pieces of advice on how to help Vince deal with the problems of dating the daughter of his father’s worst enemy. Throughout the conversation, the two boys become close each other, brought together by the problems that they both share experience in. My first choice in making this project was the characters whom I would chose to communicate with each other. I have both Romeo and Vince have a comedic undertone for the first few letters, but as the conversation progresses to more serious topics, the comedic undertone is replaced by a much more serious one. My character’s conversation dances around the theme that one should put thought into their actions before they commit to them. This theme is shown in their letters when Romeo tells Vince to think before he does anything that he regrets. The theme also appears when Vince, during the beginning of the letter is thinking about making a choice which may change his life for the worse, but after putting thought into his decision, decides to not go through with it. Another theme in the letters is that love is an obsessive idea in that when you are in love, it dominates you. This theme shows up in the way that the the boys repeatedly talk about their loved ones.
