When I first decided to embark onto a social work course, my understanding about what is social work, what a social worker's job roles entails ,what it is for and the significance of assessment in social work practice, was minimal. At my interview, I was asked why I want to be a social worker, in order to be accepted onto this particular course. I simply answered that I want to help people, and I think that I have the necessary skills, motivation and dedication to do that. Now, being on my final year, after a long and fascinating learning journey, I have come to realize that this question is far more complex that I had initially thought. The centrality of holistic assessments to effective social work practice will be attentively explored in the first part of this summative reflective review. The second part of this paper will have as a focal point a succinct and concise exploration and evaluation of my own practice with reference to professional body (Health and care professions Council) Standards of Proficiency. I would totally subscribe to their suggestions, as very often, during my placement, I found myself in a dilemma about how I should proceed when carried out various assessments such as risk assessments, viability assessments or child and family assessments. For my second placement I was situated in the Court Team who aimed to provide support, planning and assessment for permanency for children who were Looked after by the Local Authority. Some of the work involved working with children who were placed with family members under Special Guardianship Orders or with prospective adopters, as well returning children home to birth
